HS football Saturday morning rewind

Where do you really start after some of last night’s scene-setting scenarios that left us with a few more good games to talk about for next week.

Paul gave us some of the inside on the Page-High Point Central activity that had the Pirates’s trigger-man, Will Newman, missing to start the game. Will was on the sidelines with turf toe. Joe Barile will have more from the Pirate camp later today here at the site. The weather was a factor and it consumed most of the observers thinking on the way into the games.

Southern Guilford saw their season come to a close in the Storm’s 40-14 loss to North Pitt. SG ends it at (7-5) after a very traumatic year. Southeast Guilford put up a fight on very sloppy night but the Falcons couldn’t cash in on first and goal at the Ragsdale one yard line and a fumble ended what might have been for the Falcons. The game was at 24-14 at that point and a score by QB Terrance Topps could have made it 24-21 and then comes the onside kick and who knows what happens after that.

We do know that Ragsdale was the winner 24-14, in what was a great team effort by the Tigers. As Tom Keller mentioned in his N&R account, Tim Romer, the Ragsdale quarterback, managed the game so well for the Tigers. Romer stayed cool with his two TD passes to DeSean Anderson and he was on top of his game all night long. The team defense by Ragsdale was at times near-flawless with Stone, Sparks, Ellison, NcNeil, Ashworths, and others really getting it done. The long TD run on the first series of the game by SEG’s Tivon Clark was beautiful, but after that the Tigers’ “D” really tightened up.

Western Guilford will be up next for Ragsdale(12-0) in Jamestown as the Hornets come into round two at (7-5) after going way down the road to defeat Erwin Triton 23-0. Now WG will take that short drive down Guilford College-Jamestown Road to take on the Tigers for a chance to possibly meet Dudley in round three. If anyone has any Hornet numbers from last night please send them our way.

Looking at our teams as a whole, we had 11 going into round one from Guilford County and now we have 7 teams remaining pending the Northwest Guilford at Richmond County game tonight. We still have Ragsdale, Western Guilford, Page, Dudley, Northeast Guilford, High Point Andrews and then again, NWG.

We lost one of our teams that started the year red-hot and ended up losing five straight, as Eastern Guilford fell hard at Pittsboro Northwood, 35-7. The EG Wildcats close at (7-5) after winning 7 in a row at the beginnng of the season. High Point Andrews(8-3) was a surprise winner last night and the Red Raiders won big over the defending State 3-A champions, Western Alamance, 36-18. Next Friday, HPA will travel to meet Belmont South Point(11-1), 42-6 winners over South Rowan last night.

The Dudley Panthers(12-0) continue to take care of business as the #2 seed from the 3-AA East leveled Winterville South Central 52-7 last evening at Tarpley Stadium. QB Ricky Lewis came up big for the Panthers who will host the winner of Wilson Fike-Asheboro which is set for tonight in Asheboro. Dudley trailed early in the game with WSC, falling behind 7-0, but they went on a 52-0 run to own the rest of the game.

Northeast Guilford proved that Tommy Pursley’s Rams will not go away as they came back to defeat Wilson Hunt 13-9 in battle of 8 and 9 seeds at NEG. NEG improves to (6-6) and will be on the road next Friday at 3-AA East #1 seed Harnett Central(12-0). Harnett Central defeated Western Harnett 55-10 in last night’s round one action.

Don’t forget, Northwest Guiford(6-5) at Richmond County(7-2-1) tonight at 7:30pm.

  1. That’s amazing about Will Newman. I still wonder what it would have been like if he would have played for Grimsley.

I think the Whirlies could have had a decent team with Will at QB this year.

Thirty touchdowns. That must be tops in the state/

  2. You know I really thought the EG team had a shot to be as good as the 81 82 team with Bates Bratcher Andrews Youmans Holleman andWilder but i was wrong. This has been a big dissapointment for EG.

  3. Will has 30 passing touchdowns? or is that passing and rushing combined?
Who leads the area in touchdown passes?

  4. Tim Romer at Ragsdale has 21 TD passes is year. Not sure if that leads the area but has to be pretty close.
