As bad as they played, ECU still beat UAB:Lineback from Southeast Guilford gets first career-start at LB

Pirate play-by-play man Jeff Charles said on the broadcast, that he couldn’t believe that East Carolina had turned the ball over five times, and they still had a chance to win and they did 17-13 over UAB. LB Dustin Lineback from Southeast Guilford HS got his first career-start as an East Carolina Pirate.

Here are the Monday numbers on the Pirates:
INDIVIDUAL NOTES
• Captains: Patrick Pinkney, Pierre Bell, Zack Slate and Matt Dodge.
• Consecutive starting streaks: Jay Ross (21), C.J. Wilson (20), Van Eskridge (18), Pierre Bell (17), Davon Drew(15), Cory Dowless (11) and Sean Allen (11).
• Streaks snapped: Dekota Marshall (10).
• First career starts: Dustin Lineback (LB).
• Patrick Pinkney completed his first four passes of the game for 60 yards including a 10-yard TD strike to Davon Drew … Finished the game completing 19-of-25 passes for 222 yards with one TD and two INTs … Recorded sixth 200-plus yard passing game of the season and eighth of his career … For his career he now has 289 completions (sixth all-time at ECU) and 3,387 passing yards (seventh all-time at ECU).
• Rob Kass led the Pirates to a come back win in the fourth quarter guiding the offense in the fourth quarter and taking the lead 17-13 with 2:20 remaining … Completed 1-of-2 passes for 17 yards.
• Michael Bowman returned three kickoffs for 67 yards including his first career in the first quarter for 22 yards.
• Linval Joseph had six tackles in the game (two solo, four assists) including a one-yard TFL in the first quarter …
• Zack Slate had six tackles (five solo, assist) on the night.
• Nick Johnson tied Bell for the team lead with nine total stops (six solo, three assists).
• Brandon Simmons rushed for 14 yards on four carries including a two-yard TD run in the fourth quarter with 2:20 remaining in the game … He now has five TDs on the season (3/rush; 2/rcv).
• Travis Simmons returned three punts on the night for 45 yards … Finished with five total tackles (two solo, three assists).
• Kevin Gidrey caught his second pass of the season in the first quarter (four yards).
• J.R. Rogers rushed for a career-high 54 yards on a career-best 10 carries, including a career-long run of 14 yards in the first quarter … Followed that up with a nine-yard run in the first … Had one KO return for 36 yards (third quarter).
• Norman Whitley had 11 carries for 17 yards … Caught one pass for 17 yards.
• Davon Drew caught a career-high seven balls for a career-best 95 yards to lead all receivers.
• Ben Hartman extended his current school record to 74 consecutive PATs made with his extra point conversion in
the fourth quarter … Was 2-for-2 on the night in PATs … Converted on 1-of-3 on FGAs (made: 47; missed: 43, 42)
… Hartman has now made at least one FG in eight consecutive games dating back to N.C. State (2008).
• Darryl Freeny caught a career-best four passes and tied a career-high with 36 yards receiving.
• Joe Womack caught a career-high three passes for a career-best 53 yards …
• Pierre Bell tied for the team lead with nine stops (six solo, three assists) including a two-yard TFL in the second quarter … Now has nine TFLs on the season and 19.5 for his career … Picked off his second pass of the season.
