Northwest girls and Northern boys earn victories at NWG:HS Hoops report

The Northwest Guilford girls trailed Northern in the first half but led by the hard-charging Gretchen Bennett they fought back to claim a 62-55 win over the Nighthawks on Tuesday evening. Impressive work by Bennett and Mari Furr attacking the basket and NG seemed to break under the Viking defensive pressure in the second half. Both teams were living off of layups and NWG came out on top to move to (3-1) on the young season. Northern is still missing top inside player Samantha Coffer.

In the boys game Jacob Lawson got into foul trouble and Christian McCain hurt his ankle/foot, but Jonathan Frye still had the Nighthawk eye and with every try, there was little he couldn’t buy, as he ended up with 25 points, 14 boards and 6 assists in the NG win over NWG, 70-45. Remember those nights when they said you couldn’t buy a basket? Frye had all he wanted and more last night. Michael Neal helped the ‘Hawks with 14.

Pictures from girls and video boys coming later today.

Ragsdale rolled over the Grimsley girls 41-25 and the Tiger boys topped Grimsley 54-50. Jay Canty and Wally Jones had 14 a-piece for Ragsdale, while Forrest Valley Academy graduate Big Max Miller had a slam for the Whirlies. Grimsley at SEG tonight and last night the Falcon girls bombed WG 83-35.

The Southern boys nearly upset HPC but the Bison won on a last second shot by David Ledbetter and slipped through the Storm 63-61, while HPA won 68-58 over Lexington(Is Tony Wahshington playing yet? Mayge he is still in training for the Shrine football game.), Page pounded NEG 75-44(Juilius Brooks and Mitchell Oates were playing big), GDS(8-0) whipped Williams 77-59(Lucas Weavill 20, Javan Mitchell 15, Jay Lewis and Brandon Dorsett 11 each) and HP Westchester is (7-0) after taking Wesleyan, 60-46.

More on the girls later today.

In the Ragsdale win over the Grimsley girls, Courtney Arrington was again the leader for the Tigers and she will be making a statement to be named Pizza Hut Invitational MVP later, on Jan. 1, Jan. 2, and Jan. 3, at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.

SEG over WG saw Paris Alston with 17 and Amy Bealsey with 14 pave the way for the Lady Falcons. HP Wesleyan rocked Westchester 66-29, the HPC girls mowed down Southern 74-34 and Vandalia defeated WS Atkins 48-35 to send the VCS Vikings to (7-0) for the year. Kind of makes you wonder, how did VCS end up playing Atkins?????
