Beasley injures wrist but SEG girls prevail 58-49 over Grimsley, Manley leads Whirlie boys over Falcons 62-49

One of the top players in our area, guard Amy Beasley, from the Southeast Guilford Falcons fell and injured her wrist during the SEG-Grimsley girls game Wednesday night at SEG. The Falcons, led by Paris Alston’s 21 points, went on to win the game 58-49 over the Grimsley Whirlies.

Beasley fell with all the weight on her left wrist and had to leave the game in the first half. This effected the navicular bone which attaches to the radius and ulna in the forearm. This is Amy’s non-shooting hand and in talking to her dad, David Beasley, they were hoping something could be done to allow her to keep playing in this her senior season. Mr. Beasley is the assistant coach for the Falcon girls and he told me that his daughter had never suffered an injury before and this would be a very tough way to close out her high school career.

I’m no doctor, but I told Coach Beasley that maybe they could go with the tight ace bandage wrapped around a brace. I hope Amy can keep going, she comes from a super family and I would hate to see things end like this, and with the Ragsdale games coming up, this is not the way it is supposed to go in your senior year.

When Beasley left the game, Grimsley trimmed the lead to one right before halftime and the Whirlies after losing five seniors from last year’s team still played the Falcons hard before SEG prevailed with the 58-49 victory. Tiffinay Lucas had 17 to pace the Whirlies, who are missing Trumae Lucas(Florida), Nicole Hargraves(UNC-Charlotte), Jasmine Alston(UNC-Wilmington). Krystin Fields(Towson State), and Amber Cook(Maryland Eastern Shore), all seniors from last year’s squad. The team is also missing former head coach Phil Weaver who was at the game. Hank Bullard has taken over for Coach Weaver and he will do a fine job.

Paris Alston, who led the Falcons has signed with South Carolina State.

In the boys game, Grimsley won it over SEG 62-49 with Keith Manley hitting for 17 points and he had help from Kreshawn Williams with 15 and Carter Gourley connected for 13. Junior Cade Isley hit a long range three-pointer to spark the Whirlies from the bench as a key reserve. Manley also added 10 boards and several blocks.

Josh Cobb(who I believe is a transfer guard from Dudley) had 18 for SEG, while Trey Artis, whose dad Wilbur played for the Falcons many moons ago, had 11 points as did Chuckie Becton, whose father Chuckie Sr. played for N.C. A&T back when Grimsley coach Darren Corbett’s dad Don Corbett was coaching the Aggies. Isn’t it cool how all of these hoop pieces tie in together.

Calvin Hunt who played at Greensboro College, used to be the head boys coach at SEG, was the girls coach at Smith, was the JV girls coach at Dudley, was at Grimsley, and now he’s the assistant boys coach at Western Guilford, anyway Coach Hunt was at the game with Reggie Perkins Sr. and Jr. from Western, and Coach Hunt told me that his son Sam Hunt is doing well at Allen Middle School and that little Sammy has played so much basketball already, that Sam may retire before he gets to high school. Sam has won the Pizza Hut Invitational/Little Four free throw shooting contest more times than you would want to know. Calvin Hunt is a great coach and he knows a lot about the local basketball scene.

In other hoops last night, High Point Andrews made it two losses in a row for Trinity as the Red Raiders cooled off the Bulldogs by 20, 69-49. Josh Pittman was hot again for the Bulldogs with 29 while Torian Showers and Corban Collins had 15 and 14 for Andrews. Andrews plays High Point Central on Friday night.

The Bishop McGuinness girls topped Dudley 59-41 with Dudley running out to a 14-7 first quarter lead and then it was the Villians out-scoring Dudley 23-3 in the third quarter. Dudley led by Helen Terry’s 13 points falls to (1-2). The Page girls defeated Northeast Guilford 38-30 back on Tuesday, a much closer game than the one played at Page last Tuesday.

The Greensboro Day School girls topped Salem Academy 36-27 with track-star Kristen Rush pumping in 16 points to pace the Bengals. She is the cousin of former GDS boys hoops star Steven Rush who finished up last year at N.C. A&T. The only other girls game we have to report on is the win by HPA over Trinity, 52-44.

Games tonight include:
Page at Mount Tabor(Boys game should be real interesting.)
Eastern Guilford at Cedar Ridge
Oak Ridge at Salem Baptist
Dudley at Smith(They are playing this one tonight because of Dudley-NEG in the football playoffs tomorow night at Dudley and the Dudley boys will play host to Word of God in basketball on Saturday night.)
