SPECIAL EVENTS CENTER TO HOST 7TH ANNUAL CAROLINA KARTING“KING OF THE CONCRETE” INDOOR KARTING CHAMPIONSHIPS

“Fast, intense, and exciting” is how drivers and crews describe indoor kart racing. On Saturday, December 20th, the 7th Annual Carolina Karting “King of the Concrete” Indoor Championships will take place in the Greensboro Coliseum Complex’s Special Events Center.

This years’ event will highlight the Pit Crew Challenge. An invitation was sent to each NASCAR team for drivers, crew members, and shop employees of their respective racing team to participate in this 20 lap race that will showcase the best driving talent on pit road.

Race promoter Andrew Harris says “Imagine taking ordinary racing and minimizing it down to a track that’s just 500 feet in length.  You get fierce wheel-to-wheel action in six to seven second laps and karts pulling 1.5 lateral G’s in the corners. With 14 karts on the track, it’s challenging just to watch. The track is inside a building; therefore, it has short straights and hairpin turns. The drivers do not have time to relax. From green flag to checkered flag it’s full throttle with occasional braking to stay off the guy in front of you. It’s definitely the most challenging form of kart racing.”

The Carolina Karting “King of the Concrete” Indoor Championships is one of the premier indoor events in the country. Last year’s event attracted 245 drivers in 17 classes competing in approximately 25 races packed into six hours of non-stop action. Unlike other forms of racing, there are no long delays between races when one group exits the track, the next group enters so the noise level never dies down and the action on the track never stops!

The secret to indoor racing is in the track.  A layer of adhesive is applied to the smooth concrete racing surface.  After an hour of drying time karts with extra-soft rubber tires take practice laps which create a thick layer of tire rubber on top of the adhesive. The grip becomes so strong it’s difficult to walk across the track without effort!
