HS hoops from the weekend:HP Andrews at Ragsdale tonight

NEG and Eastern split their games at UNCG on Saturday night with the Wildcat girls winning 58-51 led by Guilford County Watch List player Miranda Jenkins with 21 points. In boys action NEG topped EG 54-53.

The Bishop McGuinness girls defeated Rockingham County 56-39 behind DeFrancesco, Buckland, and Thompson. Wasn’t Megan Buckland over at Wesleyan last year? The HP Wesleyan boys won over Cary Academay 46-38 with James Robbins and Johnathan Johnson leading the Trojans to victory.

In Friday night notables from the local hoops scene we saw the Page girls lead Ragsdale at the half, then later the Pirates rallied to win over the Tigers in Jamestown. In the boys game Julius Brooks scored the first 7 points of the game for Page, but the Tigers made defensive adjustments to quiet Brooks and Jordan Weethe and Ragsdale went on to win in overtime by three points over Page. Joe Barile has the story here at the site. Brooks looked great early, but with the Tiger “D” and the way the offense was working he could not get his game going after the hot start early.

In other girls games NWG took out Western 75-45 with Gretchen Bennett, another kid on our Guilford County Watch List, hitting for 22. In the boys game, WG turned the tables taking a 56-45 win over NWG. The Dudley boys ran past Bartlett Yancey 120-48 as P.J. Hairston connected for 39 Panther points. Hard to believe, but according to the box, BY scored 12 points in each of the four quarters to finish with their 48. The Dudley girls wore out BY 103-23 and they were up on the Buccaneers 58-3 at halftime.

High Point Central stopped Southern in girls aciton 59-9 and the Bison led 45-6 at the end of three quarters and we heard Coach Kenny Carter kept up the defensive pressure until late in the game. SEG, without Amy Beasley, rolled over Smith 64-43. In other girls contests, it was HP Andrews topping Grimsley 47-37, as the Red Raiders move to (6-1) and Vandalia Christian improved to (10-0) after the Vikings’ 58-29 victory over Alamance.

More boy’s news, Greensboro Day suffered a rare loss, to Ravenscroft out of Raleigh, falling by 14, 56-42. Ravenscroft has the big kid(Ryan Kelly) that has already committed to Duke and he was probably the difference in this game(heard he had 27 points). Keith Manley paced the Grimsley Whirlies to a 65-58 win over HP Andrews. Manley had 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to help give the Whirlies the win. Big Charles Goodwin was the Raiders’ leader. Last up the SEG boys ran their record to (4-3) as they defeated Southern Alamance 56-41.

Hoops are hot and we will be looking for a game tonight……

*****High Point Andrews at Ragsdale TONIGHT*****
Mark hit the nail on the head, and I was back checking my master schedule and this one is on for tonight.

Both games should be good, HPA girls (6-1), Ragsdale boys unbeaten(6-0)….

  1. I caught the NEG/Eastern game, and I must say NEG girls were more impressive this time around than against SWG last Monday. They still have alot of work to do and they dont have much of a bench. I used to see Miranda Jenkins/Eastern working out at the sportsplex and her focus is crazy! She would be by herself going thru drills and it showed Saturday night.

I was shocked to see the Dudley/BY scores. I heard the BY girls had 18 on their team. Guess the big numbers dont help. I will catch them tomorrow night at Northern for their conference opener. Northern and NEG match up Friday. Should be interesting for the girls. The NEG boys lost some big players to graduation and transfers so I will pull for Northern on that one.

Really wish I could catch the HPA/Ragsdale game tonight. I look forward to your update! Will there be any updates tonight?

  2. We may get some updates here at this post from Mark Teer who attends many of the Ragsdale home games and he does a great job keeping us aware of what’s going on in Jamestown.

We might hear from Kirk who is also at most of the Ragsdale games(especially the ones on Fridays) and there is always a chance that Jim Modlin might be at the game and send us something later on….

You never know, so stay tuned as they say in the TV business…..I don’t really know anything about TV but I’ve heard that’s what they are saying……

  3. Ragsdale posted their eight consecutive victory with a 48 – 36 win over Andrews. It was tied 25 all at halftime. The Tigers stepped up the defensive intensity in the second half. Andrews went 4 minutes in the third before they got their first basket and were held to 5 for the quarter as Ragsdale took the lead by 10 at 40 – 30. The fourth was more defense from Ragsdale, holding the Red Raiders to 6 and putting on a ball handling display as they went into their motion offense and controlled the ball for long stretches. Ragsdale’s Jay Canty led all scorers with 16 points. Charles Goodwin led Andrews with 11 but only 3 in the second half.

  4. I was at the game. I would prefer to reserve comment. I know these kids and like these kids. I cheer for these kids. I can’t be objective and I don’t want to offend anyone. Plus, I don’t know much about basketball. Someone more removed from the kids should give a report.
