NWG takes two from EG at UNCG, tonight’s lineup and the AM950 call

Northwest Guilford took two games from Eastern Guilford last night at UNCG’s Flemming Gym and both games saw EG lead early, but then fall late.

The girls game was the best game of any game, boys or girls, that I have seen so far this season with Northwest pulling it out in overtime, 81-77. In the boys contest it was NWG over EG 60-57.

The girls game went 25-15 EG after one quarter of action. EG led 32-27 at the half. It was EG over NWG 55-48 at the end of three. At the end of regulation we were all tied up, at 71-71. NWG goes on to take the victory, 81-77.

For the boys EG went on top 19-14 after one. Halftime showed Eastern in the lead 32-29. At the end of the third quarter EG was still in front, 43-40. But when the game was on the line and when it counted the most, NWG wins it, 60-57.

Again, that girls game was one of the best you’ll ever see. Here are the final stats on the EG girls:
Miranda Jenkins: 20 pts, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 4 blocks, 1 steal
Capricia Smalls: 17 pts, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 2 steals, 2 blocks
Lashonda Anderson: 16 pts, 11 rebounds
Kristin Crosby: 12 pts, 5 assists,
Amerijah Jamison: 10 pts, 5 assists

For Northwest it was Gretchen Bennett with 28, Melissa Foures with 26, Katlynn Shelton with 9, Mari Furr with 7 and Natalie Harper with 6 to lead the Vikings.

Melissa Foures came out early in this game like a house on fire, but Eastern was doing such a good job of hitting their shots from the floor it wouldn’t dent the Wildcats early lead. Foures had 10 points by the end of the first quarter and she was on pace to hit 40 points on the night, but Coach Joyner was forced to rest her in order to allow her to remain effective. Foures was 12-12 from the foul line for the game. She has great foot-work in the lane and she will be a force to be reckoned with when Foures faces the Metro 4-A.

Bennett didn’t get hot until the second half, but when she got started it was almost over/lights out. Bennett has a high-arching three-point shot and she can let it rip from way downtown. Bennett has the experience of a travel-ball player and she was able to take over the game late in the second half.

Mari Furr was a star shining bright for NWG last night as she went 5-5 at the foul line late in the game when Eastern was forced to foul and believe me, Furr hit the shots…..She also hit a nice left-side layup on a back-door cut in OT to help lift the Vikings to victory.

The balance was what stood out for Eastern last evening and the attitude exhibited by both teams was exceptional. EG and NWG played so hard and that’s what made this one of the best games in our area this year.

NWG a 4-A team, had to battle back to beat the 2-A Lady Wildcats, and that’s because EG got off to such a good start and they fought and stayed ahead most of the way and they found a way to score on their last possession to send the game into overtime.

Kristin Crosby was red-hot early on the outside for the Lady ‘Cats and on the inside, Lashonda Anderson was as smooth as silk as she rebounded and put the shots back in the hole, keeping her team in the game the whole night long. Capricia Smalls was playing big and she along with Crosby, Jamison, and Jenkins proved that the ‘Cats can hit some outside shots from long range. Smalls also has the ability to move inside and help out Anderson on the boards.

Jamison has a real nice outside shot and the shot is punctuated by her release and the tight little follow-through. Jenkins was all over the place and we might start going all over the place when I describe her game. Outside, inside, blocking shots, making saves, she can do it all and she is a team leader. Miranda Jenkins and Gretchen Bennett put on quite a show as they willed their teams to victory last night and the results of the contest showed on their faces at game’s end.

Bennett had the big smile and Jenkins was fighting back tears in what might end up being one of the best games that we will witness this season. Jenkins must go home and take a black magic marker and write the word CONFERENCE in big letters on the wall in her bedroom.

Jenkins and her Lady ‘Cats played their hearts out, but for Miranda, Capricia, Lashonda, Kristin, and Amerijah, the prize is in the skies. Look up and you’ll see the CONFERENCE title has to be your focus now. Reidsville must be stopped. The CONFERENCE is the key and you need to be there with the CONFERENCE TROPHY in the end.

We have written so much about the girls that we will have to come back and give the boys some spot time here later on. I will say this, that Northwest played better team ball in the end-of-game situations and it looked like they were running their offense as it appeared that Eastern was just putting up shots.

NWG has a deep rotation and their men were fresh at the end. Big Pat McCarthy with those trade-mark sideburns likes the outsider and he can hit while Devin Murphy was flying around all night for the Vikings as he made his ascent to the basket.

Andy Fox did a solid job of running the offense when he got the call and Marquise Lucas was strong for NWG as he, Murphy, and McCarthy led the Vikings in scoring. Rashad Williams was tops for EG with 20-plus on the night.

*****I just thought of something that may be important as we look at these games…Where was NWG’s Kyle Vebber last night?????*****

Tonight we have:
Wilmington Hoggard at Greensboro Day(boys only)
High Point Andrews at High Point Central
Southwest Guilford at Northwest
North Davidson at Page
Bishop McGuinness at Grimsley
Northeast Guilford at Northern
Morehead at Western
Trinity at Southeast
Ragsdale at Eastern Randolph

AM950 Radio call will be the Smith Golden Eagles at the Dudley Panthers with the pre-game at 7pm, tip-off scheduled at 7:30 and the girls get ging at 6.

  1. Kyle Vebber suffered a severe sprained anke vs. Forsyth Country Day. Tried to come back early last week
and had a couple good games. Ankle did not respond so he is out until Little Four.
