Mangini, Marinelli, and Crennel all get the NFL boot

Three coaches out with the NFL regular season just barely over and it may be over for Brett Farve too. Mike Singletary has been retained as the head coach of the San Francisco 49er’s and that still seems strange, as you would think of him as a Chicago Bear for life.

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Eric Mangini is out as head coach of the New York Jets a day after the team lost for the fourth time in five games and failed to make the playoffs.

The clincher was the Jets’ 24-17 loss to Miami on Sunday that gave the Dolphins the AFC East title.

“We don’t take this decision lightly,” Jets owner Woody Johnson said at a Monday morning news conference. “We respect Eric for what he’s done but we want to build on the successful foundation he has laid.”

Mangini, 37, was 23-26 in three seasons with the Jets, including 0-1 in the playoffs.

“For the current New York Jets organization, we’ve made the decision to move on,” Johnson said. “It’s a judgment call.”

The Detroit Lions’ pursuit of at least one victory in 2009 will have to come without Rod Marinelli, who was fired as coach Monday after a historic 0-16 season.

The Lions lost to the Green Bay Packers 31-21 on Sunday, making them the first team to go winless through a 16-game season. The 1976 expansion Tampa Bay Buccaneers (0-14) were the last NFL team to complete a season without a victory.

“No competitor wants to go through something like this,” Marinelli said after Sunday’s game. “This is not fun to go through, obviously. But there’s people going through a lot worse than this.”

In a statement released Monday, owner William Clay Ford Sr. announced the promotions of Tom Lewand to team president and Martin Mayhew to general manager.

Ford also announced that defensive coordinator Joe Barry, assistant offensive line coach Mike Barry and secondary coach Jimmy Lake would not be retained; the contract of defensive line coach Joe Cullen will not be renewed; Jim Colletto has been reassigned to offensive line coach; and Dave Boller, the assistant director of pro personnel, will not be retained.

Marinelli was 10-38 in three seasons in Detroit.

BEREA, Ohio — The Cleveland Browns fired coach Romeo Crennel following a 4-12 season.

The decision came one day after general manager Phil Savage was dismissed. Owner Randy Lerner met with Crennel on Monday morning and the team announced the coach’s firing moments before a news conference began.

Lerner, who’s been expected to make a run at former Steelers coach Bill Cowher, said Monday that Cowher told him he was not interested in joining the Browns, the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported.

As far as finding a new GM, Lerner told the Plain Dealer he has asked for permission to talk to Patriots vice president of personnel Scott Pioli.

Crennel had three years left on a contract extension he signed in January after the Browns went 10-6 and just missed the playoffs last season.

Crennel went 24-40 in four seasons with the Browns, who entered 2008 with huge expectations but collapsed amid a series of injuries and uneven play on offense and defense. They didn’t score an offensive touchdown while losing their last six games and posted their fifth season of at least 10 losses in six years.

Although Crennel’s dismissal had been expected for some time, Lerner waited until after the season out of respect for the 61-year-old coach and former defensive coordinator, who had never been a head coach at any level before taking over the Browns in 2005.
