Marathon is Moving

How did High Point get this event over Greensboro????? I heard it had something to do with the cost of the police/security…..

I don’t think a bunch of dead-tired runners are going to bother anyone and the traffic through town is always light on Saturdays. The crowds that show up to watch aren’t going to be football-type numbers either.

Organizers of the second annual UnitedHealthcare NC Marathon are moving the May 2, 2009 event from Greensboro to High Point, N.C.

The marathon, half-marathon and family 5K will finish near Showplace!, in the center of High Point’s International Furniture Market.

The move is based on bugetary considerations, says Melissa Fourrier, Race Director and Executive Director of Foster Friends of North Carolina.

Press conference Wednesday January 14, 2009 at 2pm at Showplace in High Point.

The Second Annual N.C. Marathon will be held on May 2, 2009. This race is sponsored by UnitedHealthcare of the Carolinas and Foster Friends of North Carolina (FFNC), a nonprofit charitable organization that provides a brighter future for children experiencing foster care. The money raised by this event will help support the programs and services that FFNC provides for these children.

This Marathon was first held in 2008 and it was a huge success. Over 1,000 runners participated in the Marathon, Half Marathon and 5K Run. Runners came from across the United States and as far away as Tokyo, Japan and the United Kingdom. One racer’s comment was “It was overall a great race that I want to run again.”

Because of the success last year, FFNC has decided to make this an annual event. This year it will be on May 2, 2009 and they are offering a Marathon, Half Marathon and a Family 5K run.

Some of the event information is still being finalized, and will be added to this web site as it becomes available. Be sure to check back for more details.
