Gavin Grant in Hot Water
RALEIGH — A former N.C. State basketball standout turned himself in to police this week after he was charged with participating in a credit card scheme at a Triangle Town Center store.
Gavin Grant, who played guard and forward for NCSU from 2004 through 2008, has been charged with one felony count of obtaining property by false pretenses, said Raleigh police spokesman Jim Sughrue.
“The charge is related to some credit card transactions and stems from a report we received from Saks Fifth Avenue at the Triangle Town Center,” Sughrue said.
A store employee, Paige Shamone Gilliam, 25, of Raleigh, has also been charged, police said.
Grant has been playing in the NBA’s Developmental League with the Utah Flash, where he has been averaging about four rebounds and 12 points a game, according to the league’s Web site. Four days before his arrest, Grant dropped 14 points against the Los Angeles D-Fenders, according to the league Web site.
Police were first alerted about the incident on Oct. 14, Sughrue said.
Police arrested Gilliam on Jan. 6. She was taken to the Wake County jail and released from custody after posting a $9,000 bond, a jail spokesman said.
Grant, 23, turned himself in one week later, on Tuesday, police reported. He was released on his own recognizance, a jail spokesman said.
