Guilford Ranked Among Final 2008 NCAA Statistics Leaders

Greensboro, N.C. — Four members of the Guilford College football team rank among the final 2008 NCAA Division III statistical leaders in nine categories, and the Quakers are in the top 50 in six team categories.

Quarterback Josh Vogelbach (N. Fort Meyers, Fla./Bishop Verot (East Carolina)) ranked in the top 15 in four categories. He finished fifth in completions per game (27.20), seventh in total offense (319.4 ypg.), eighth in passing yards per game (304.40), and 14th in total passing yards (3,044). Vogelbach, who graduated in December, concluded his career with 19 NCAA Division III records, including career passing yardage.

Senior wide receiver Kevin Vaughn (Mt. Airy, N.C./East Surry), a Third Team D3football.com All-America selection, ranked in the top 15 in three categories. He was fifth in receiving yards per game (119.70), eighth in total receiving yards (1,197), and 13th in receptions per game (7.60).

Junior defensive lineman Markas Brunson (Columbia, S.C./Rosewood (N.C.)) and freshman defensive back Kenneth Hyman III (Williamston, N.C./Roanoke) helped anchor the Quakers’ defense. Hyman III ranked 14th in passes defended per game (1.5), while Brunson ranked 25th in the nation in sacks per game (.85).

As a team, the Quakers ranked among the top 50 in four offensive categories. They finished 10th in offensive third-down efficiency (.478), 12th in passing offense (306.7 ypg.), 13th in first downs per game (23.60), and 20th in total offense (429.20 ypg.). Guilford led Division III in passing offense in 2006 and 2007. They also finished in the top 50 in punt return average, finishing 28th (12.82), and kickoff return average, placing 36th (21.68).

The Quakers finished the season with a record of 4-6, 1-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC). Head coach Kevin Kiesel expects as many as 47 letter winners back for the 2009 campaign.
