NC State Storms Back For First ACC Victory
Shayla Fields scored 15 of her 19 points after halftime to fuel an NC State come-from-behind 57-46 win at Virginia Tech Sunday afternoon from Cassell Coliseum.
The victory improves NC State (9-12, 1-5 ACC) to 10-0 all-time against Virginia Tech (10-11, 1-6 ACC) and 125-0 when allowing less than 50 points.
In gaining its first league win of the season, the Wolfpack shot 51.9 percent from the field after halftime. A 24-10 run broke open a 28-all score at the 15:41 mark of the second.
Sharnise Beal added 14 points for the Pack. Nikki Davis led Virginia Tech with 14.
Deacons Shut Down Miami 78-69
In her first career start, Wake Forest freshman Secily Ray netted 24 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to help the Demon Deacons take a 78-69 win over Miami on Sunday. Wake Forest improved to 14-5 and 2-4 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and Miami is now 11-10 and 1-6.
Ray was the game’s high scorer and rebounder. The Hurricanes were also led by a freshman in scoring, guard Shenise Johnson, who added 22. LaToya Drake had a team-high seven rebounds for Miami.
WFU senior co-captain Corinne Groves recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Georgia Tech Defense Stifles Clemson For Joseph’s 100th Victory
If it wasn’t artistic, it was historic. Overcoming an ice-cold start and 26 turnovers, the Georgia Tech women’s basketball team defeated Clemson 49-41 Sunday at Alexander Memorial Coliseum to give head coach MaChelle Joseph her 100th career victory.
For the Yellow Jackets (16-5, 4-3 in the ACC), their sixth consecutive win over Clemson (12-11, 2-7) gives Joseph a 100-71 record in her five-plus seasons on The Flats. Afterward, Tech interim president Dr. Gary Schuster presented the coach a ball commemorating her achievement.
Coming off Thursday’s 68-42 rout of Miami, Tech misfired from the start. The Jackets were scoreless for the first 6:23 until sophomore Alex Montgomery (nine points) hit two free throws. They missed their first nine shots from the field before Montgomery’s three-point play cut Clemson’s lead to 7-5.
No. 10 UNC Dominates North Carolina Central, 98-45
Italee Lucas continued her strong offensive play a game after putting up her career-high point total.
Lucas scored 17 of her 19 points in the first half to help No. 10 North Carolina defeat North Carolina Central 98-45 on Sunday. She made her first five shots — all 3-pointers — including one that opened the scoring just 7 seconds into the game.
Rashanda McCants added 14 points for the Tar Heels (19-3), who scored the game’s first 14 points and led 19-1 before the Eagles made their first field goal with 14:19 remaining in the first half.
North Carolina, which led 57-19 at halftime, shot 54.9 percent from the field en route to totaling at least 90 points for the 10th time this season.
No. 18 Virginia Handles Longwood, 88-50
No. 18 Virginia defeated Longwood, 88-50, Sunday at John Paul Jones Arena. Lyndra Littles (17 points, seven rebounds), Kristen London (15 points), Monica Wright (13 points) and Ariana Moorer (15 points) led UVa to its third-straight win.
Virginia (18-4) improved to 12-1 at John Paul Jones Arena this season, went to 7-4 all-time against Longwood (6-14) and won its fifth-straight game in the series with the Lancers.
Every Cavalier that got into the game scored. London’s 15 points were a career-high as she connected on three 3-pointers. Jayna Hartig contributed eight points and a career-high eight rebounds, while Britny Edwards and Britnee Millner each netted five.
Virginia’s offense was clicking early and head coach Debbie Ryan was able to spread out playing time. Wright and Littles each had 13 at the half, and 10 different Cavaliers had scored. Virginia held a 55-25 lead at halftime.
