GTCC SUNDAY BASEBALL REPORT‏

Tony Sutphin reporting:

GTCC Improved their record to 4-6 with another Doubleheader Sweep today – Beating Burlington Community College out of New Jersey. In the opener GTCC held off a late rally to win 4-3 and in game two the bats came alive to mash out a 11-5 victory. John Neese (NW Guilford) continues to lead GTCC collecting multiple hits again today – he also had the defensive play of the day. With GTCC up 4-3 in the top of the 7th, BCC had a runner on 2nd and the batter ripped a basehit to LF, Brandon Dhue threw a strike to cutoff man Hector Bello who relayed to Neese – it appeared the runner beat the throw but Neese had the plate blocked to record the 2nd out of the inning. The next batter was called out on strikes to preserve the victory. Cory Salisbury picked up the save in game 1. Jack Shelton (Eastern Randolph) recorded a double in game 1 as the DH – good to see Jack getting back healthy – he will be a big offensive contributor when he gets 100%. Solid Chad Hockaday (SW Guilford) went 1-3 in the opener as well.

Game 2 – Starting Pitcher was CJ Riefenhauser (Iona College transfer) and he looked good, he did give up a three run bomb in the 3rd, but GTCC bats rolled from a 5-3 deficit in the 3rd to collect a 11-5 win to complete the sweep. Hector Bello looked solid all day at 3b for the Titans. Brent Young (Southern Guilford) ripped a rope down the LF line to score two runs in the second. Switch Hitter – Jonathan Fernandez hammered another double down the LF line to score another. I have seen this guy swing 3 times and he has hit three missiles. I am sure Coach Barrow is very happy to pick up 4 big wins this weekend after a rough start.

High school baseball practice starts tomorrow(Monday) – so hopefully we will get some reports and D1 schools open play on Friday!!!
