EMORY, Va. – Guilford College’s Tyler Sanborn (Mount Airy, N.C./Elkin) scored 22 points and collected 17 rebounds, both game highs, to lead the visiting Quakers to a 77-68 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball win at Emory & Henry College Wednesday. The Quakers are ranked 20th in this week’s D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll and third in the NCAA Division III South Region Rankings.

The victory marked Guilford’s (20-4, 13-2 ODAC) seventh straight, a season high, and its 16th in its last 18 games. It also gives the Quakers three straight 20-win seasons for the first time in the school’s 103-season history.

Guilford used a 14-4 run midway through the second half to turn a two-point lead into a 57-45 edge with 8:16 remaining in the game. Sanborn and George Neville (Westminster, Md./Winters Mill) both scored four points during the run. Robert Hudson made three of his five second-half three-pointers, which helped Emory & Henry rally to within 62-56 with 6:24 to play. The Quakers put the game away with a 7-1 run that included four more Sanborn points.

The host Wasps knocked down four three-pointers in the first 10:30 to build a 10-point lead midway through the half. The Quakers trailed 32-22 with 3:52 left in the half before Sanborn triggered a 14-3 half-ending run with back-to-back buckets. Guilford’s Rhett Bonner (Yadkinville, N.C./North Forsyth (Presbyterian)) scored eight straight points during the run and finished with 19 points for the game thanks to 10-of-12 free-throw shooting.

Sanborn’s 17 rebounds, one shy of his career high, featured 15 boards off the defensive glass. The junior center has a league-high 14 double-doubles and is averaging a league-high 12.2 caroms per game. Teammate Clay Henson (Glen Alpine, N.C./Freedom) chipped in 15 points and moved to within five markers of 1,000 for his career. Neville added nine points and matched his career high with 11 boards, five off the offensive glass.

Hudson’s 17 points off the bench paced the Wasps (10-15, 5-10 ODAC), who have dropped nine straight to Guilford. Terrance Grigg added 12 points on six-of-eight field-goal shooting. Camillo Weinz finished with nine points and a team-high five rebounds.

The Quakers close the regular season Saturday (2/21) against visiting Randolph College at 2:00 p.m. Before the game, Guilford will recognize the team’s two seniors and the team’s families. The Wasps close the regular season Saturday night at league-rival Roanoke College.
