ASHEBORO — Wednesday’s second round of the Mid-Piedmont Conference Tournament semifinals featured a Trinity-Southeast Guilford doubleheader — and, eventually, a split.

In the boys game, Matt Watkins had a dominating performance to lead the No. 2 Bulldogs to a 60-38 win over the third-seeded Falcons at Asheboro High School.

Second-seed SEG held off a fourth-quarter charge by No. 3 THS in the early game for a 54-42 victory. Both winners move on to play No. 1 Ragsdale with the girls game slated to start at 6:15 p.m. and the boys at 8 p.m.

Watkins scored 33 of the Bulldogs’ 60 points — 21 in the second half despite picking up his fourth foul with 54 seconds left in the third quarter.

“He did a good job working the ball inside and his teammates did a good job feeding him the ball,” THS coach Tim Kelly said. “Our focus was the inside game and we exploited that.”

The Bulldogs (18-8) led by as many as 12 in the first half, but went into the locker room with just a 30-23 lead.

THS started the second half with a 9-0 run to go ahead by 16 with 31/2 minutes left in the third quarter. SEG responded with a 9-0 run of its own and trailed 41-34 heading into the final 8 minutes.

There, the Bulldogs caught fire, going on an 11-0 run and staying on top.

Josh Pittman added 12 points for THS, while a visibly ill Chris King chipped in 11.

“We can’t get rid of it,” Kelly said of the flu bug that has hit his team for three weeks. “We’re better — we’re not well.”

Josh Cobb led SEG with 10 points.
