North Carolina tops N.C. State, ACC men’s hoops

Tar Heels Down Wolfpack 89-80

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP)–Tyler Hansbrough scored 27 points to help third-ranked North Carolina beat North Carolina State 89-80 Wednesday night.

Danny Green added 19 points for the Tar Heels (24-2, 10-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), who pulled away in the second half to win their 10th straight game. North Carolina shot 55 percent for the game to improve to 12-1 against its nearby rival since Roy Williams took over at his alma mater before the 2003-04 season.

The Tar Heels used a 14-0 run early in the second half to take control, pushing a three-point halftime lead to 53-38 with 16 minutes left. N.C. State got no closer than six points and trailed by 19 down the stretch.

Javi Gonzalez scored 18 points to lead the Wolfpack (14-10, 4-7 ACC), who shot 54 percent but couldn’t keep pace with the Tar Heels after halftime.

Seminoles Roll Past Miami, 80-67

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP)–Toney Douglas scored 24 points and Uche Echefu added 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead Florida State to an 80-67 victory over Miami on Wednesday night.

The Seminoles (20-6, 7-4 Atlantic Coast Conference) made 31 of 35 free throws and put the clamps on Miami scoring machine Jack McClinton for most of the game, limiting him to 13 points. McClinton, who had scored 101 points in the last three games, had just five at halftime and went nearly 25 1/2 minutes without scoring through the middle of the game.

James Dews led Miami (15-10, 4-8) with a season-high 19 points.

No. 8 Wake Forest Rolls Past Georgia Tech, 87-69

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 8-ranked Wake Forest men’s basketball team never trailed in the 87-69 victory over Georgia Tech at the Lawrence Joel Coliseum on Wednesday night.

Wake Forest (20-4, 7-4 ACC) is now tied for second in the conference behind North Carolina following the Demon Deacons’ 1,400th all-time win.

Georgia Tech (10-15, 1-11 ACC) drops its fifth straight game and falls to 2-8 overall and 0-6 in conference play on the road.

With the victory, the Demon Deacons now lead the series with the Yellow Jackets 35-32.

Cavaliers Down Hokies 75-61

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) -Sylven Landesberg scored 19 points and Virginia used a 17-2 run spanning the halves to take command and beat Virginia Tech 75-61 on Wednesday night.

Virginia (9-13, 3-8 Atlantic Coast Conference) won its second in a row. The Cavaliers snapped an eight-game losing streak in their last game, an 85-81 overtime victory against No. 13 Clemson, and had the perfect next opponent to rile up the crowd and allow them to play with a sudden swagger.

A.D. Vassallo scored 21 to lead the Hokies (16-9, 6-5), who lost for the fourth time in six games. They played without Jeff Allen, their leading rebounder and No. 3 scorer, who was suspended for making an obscene gesture at Maryland fans on Saturday.
