Tony Sutphin reporting:

Day 1 of the College Baseball Season was Friday and here is a rundown on how some of the local players faired:

First college that is now very close to my heart – Liberty University lost a heartbreaker to #6 Ole Miss 6-5, Coach Toman told me last week that he had a great scouting report from his old boss Coach Tanner at USC on Ole Miss and he thought they had a great chance to upset Ole Miss in the opener, but they lost a close one.

NC A & T – lost a doubleheader to Campbell, but Lester Rivenbark (Grimsley) went 2-6 in the doubleheader while catching both games. Nick Rogers (NW Guilford) had two hits on the day including a HR, CJ Beatty (Glenn) went 3-8 on the day. Eric Chiz (GBC Prepstars) got in game one and went 1-1. Jonathan Smith (SW Guilford) pitched 5.2 innings in relief in game 1. Esterlin Paulino (SW Guilford) pitched one scoreless inning of relieft, and Ruben Tourellas (Dudley) closed out game 2 on the mound. I saw the Aggies practice last week and I think Beatty, Rivenbark, Nick Boles (GBC Prepstars), Rogers, McGraw (SW Guilford) and Smith will have to have great years if the Aggies are going to make any noise this year. Frankie Johnson from Dudley is also on the Aggies roster but I dont think he got in on Friday

UNC – beat VMI 13-3 Friday at their new stadium, locals Dustin Ackley (N. Forsyth) went 3-4, Levi Michael (N Davidson) went 1-3 (Levi graduated from North Davidson in Late January and was in the starting lineup for the heels for the opener. Greg Holt (W. Forsyth) DH for the Heels going 1-3 and he also closed out the game on the mound. Ben Bunting (Randleman) started in left field and he went 1-4 on the day. I will be in Chapel Hill on Wednesday to cover the Liberty UNC matchup.

LSU – won their opener 12-3 and Tyler Hanover (E Forsyth) got in the game at 3b, he was 0-1 with a run scored and he made two plays in the field.

Clemson – got off to a good start with an 8-3 win over UNC Charlottte. Addison Johnson (N Forsyth) led the Tigers going 3-4 on the day.

UNC Asheville – got pounded 21-4 by Va Tech, Catlin Carter from Ragsdale started at 2b and went 0-2 on the day. Look for Ryan Dull (E Forsyth) to get the start today for Asheville.

USC Upstate lost the opener 11-5 to George Mason – Jeff Medley (SE Guilford) got the start at 3b for the Spartans, he was 0-4 on the day. Austin Moyer did not get in the opener.

I will be at Davidson tonite to cover Clint Moore and Army taking on Davidson – stay tuned for more on our local guys.

This is great information. Keep this kind of news coming.

I understand that Josh Montegue (NW Guilford) had some good hits to lead Greensboro College this week.

Good to hear about Nick Rogers ( NW Guilford) and his hits for A&T. I also understand that Alex Pheteplace (NW Guilford) is with Greensboro College, Will Cornelius ( NW Guilford) is with Guilford College, John Neese (NW Guilford) is with GTCC, and Brandon McKinney ( NW Guilford) is with GTCC this year and going to College of Charleston next year.

Curious on how Matt Gaski ( NW Guilford, Florida, UNC-G) is doing with the San Diego Padres organization and how is Houston Summers (NW Guilford) doing with the Arizona Diamondbacks organization?
