HS hoops Saturday morning rewind

The Conference Tournament titles have been decided and now it’s time to move on to the sectionals.

Last night we saw the Page boys and the Northwest Guilford girls take the Metro 4-A Conference crowns. NWG over Smith in overtime for the girls title and Page defeats Grimsley in the boys championship.

Page 77, Grimsley 74….NWG 63, Smith 53 in OT….

Mitchell Oates(Page) boys MVP and Hannah McIntosh(NWG) for the girls.

Hope to have more from Paul Lambeth on this one later in the day.

Grimsley—–9—–17—-19—-29——-74

Northern Guilford and Dudley took the Triad 3-A Championships at Northeast Guilford with the Nighthawks topping the Dudley Panthers 70-60 and the Dudley girls winning on a last-second shot by Brianna Patterson 58-56.

You try and to pick up all that is going on around you, but it sounded like Helen Terry(possibly Brianna Patterson) was the girl’s MVP and that Michael Neal of NG won it for the boys.

Girl’s box score from N&R:
Rockingham County — Krystal Moore 18, Liz Ferguson 16, Ashley Palm 16, Lindsey Pinckett 4, Kiyle Keck 2.

Dudley — Breanna Patterson 21, Desiree Drayton 11, Porsha Roach 9, Helen Terry 7, Tonya Jackson 7, Lakiya Rouse 2, Ebona Goins 1.

Boy’s box score:
Dudley (23-3) — PJ Hairston 22, Brennan Wyatt 16, Reggie Dillard 10, Brandon Pennix 9, Chris Whitsett 3.

Northern Guilford (24-3) — Michael Neal 22, Jonathan Frye 19, Jacob Lawson 7, JR Gant 2, Christian McCain 6, Asad Lamot 7, Dylan Berry 4, John McBeth 3.

Also last night in the Piedmont Triad 3-A Conference it was High Point Andrews over WS Reagan 73-56 and in regular season actioin, Greensboro Day School defeated High Point Wesleyan 61-49.

Northern takes the boys title over Dudley and we may be seeing a changing of the guard as we head into the State 3-A basketball playoffs. Dudley has been the top-cat around here since 1999 and the Panthers are going to have to do it the hard way if they are to return to Greenville the site of the 3-A Regionals. There is also an outside shot we might see both Northern and Dudley in Greenville, as we did with Dudley and Northeast Guilford a couple of years ago.

Northern has more depth than Dudley and the Nighthawks seem to be getting more productivity from their starting five as a whole. The bench-scoring for the Nighthawks was a big lift for them on Friday night. NG is sitting in a good position right now and they have a chance to be home all next week as do the Page Pirate boys.

The West Regional will be at the Greensboro Coliseum and we could see the Page boys, the Northwest girls, the Ragsdale boys and girls, and the High Point Andrews boys all at the Coliseum Special Events Center.

Pairings are due out later today and we try and get them up here for you and we will try and get a final for you on the Mount Tabor-North Forsyth game.

  1. The entire Northern Nighthawks team is the NC Gaters AAU team. I have watch them practice together and play together since they began as an AAU team. Most of their starting 5 do not live in Northern’s district. Second, the game last night should have been won by Northern. There were 3 fouls called on Dudley in a 30 second span. Trey Godette was issued a technical foul for trying to block a shot last night.

Northern Guilford will not win a state champsionship. Karma is a dish best served cold.

  2. Zac Baker,
You know absoultly nothing stop trying to start rumors that are false. Im sick of this **** where you start rumors when you dont know anything. I have personaly know everyone on the starting 5 of Northern. Every single one of them are in district. So just stop making up stuff when you know nothing about it.

  3. Sorry, Basketball Man, NO TRUE. Not saying you don’t have the right to have them, just know they are all not in Northern District. Personally, I think these boys should be able to play where ever they want as long as they have means of transportation.

  4. If they have illegal players, then why aren’t they ruled ineligible? Why? Becasue they aren’t illegal you idiots. Dudley has been passed by and now they want to rain on Northern’s parade. Might want to check Dudley’s starting 5’s district too.

  5. Not saying they are illegal. Just saying they are not all in Northern District. They have gone through the proper channels to be allowed to attend Northern. But know for a fact that they are not all in Northern District. Heck, I know for a fact that some players are not in Dudley district. Some at Northwest also but if they have gone through the proper channels then who cares where they play?

  6. I’m a panther through and through and support them no matter what. But I’m a fan of basketball. I’ve watched all 3 meetings between Northern and Dudley this year and I have to admit that Northern was the better team during regular season and the conference tournament. I personally don’t care where the players live eastside, westside, southside, or northside. What I do know is that they are a very good basketball team and they proved it on the court. Great job Nighthawks for an outstanding season. Now it’s playoff time! The 2 teams could posssibly meet again for a GREAT finale! Good luck to both teams, and I will be pulling for both unless they’re playing each other then it’s BLUE & GOLD!

  7. I believe all coaches need to reign in the unnecessary Physical play of their players. I have watched several games this year at the high school and middle school level (boy’s and girl’s), and this type of play is seems to be universally encouraged and expected. I had one coach tell me “we’ll do whatever it takes to gain an advantage”. There is nothing wrong with being physical on the court, just none of the excessive stuff. Just play the game the way it was intended. I think good and consistant officiating can clean up some of it, but the officiating has been very inconsistant to say the least. That’s something that would be a HOT BUTTON DISCUSSION on this site. I was very surprised when the Girl’s game is just as bad as the boy’s. The game of basketball can and should be a beautiful competition. If you take all the excessive physical antics out of the Northern and Dudley game last week, it would have been a beautiful game of chess played by a group of very talented players with two good coaches calling the next move!
