Congratulations Greensboro College: Pride Women Win 19th Straight

Newport News, Va. Dione Eccles (Clemmons NC/West Forsyth) scored a team-high 17 points as 19th-ranked Greensboro College won at Christopher Newport, 75-73, on Saturday. The Pride, which won its 19th straight game, finished the regular season 24-1 and an unprecedented 18-0 in USA South Conference play.

Eccles, who now has 1007 points in her two-year Pride career, led five Pride players in double digits. Danielle Duncan (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale) had 15 points, Lindsay Thrift (Asheboro, NC/Southwestern Randolph) scored 12, Katie Freeman (Thomasville NC/East Davidson) netted 11 and Nikki Wilborn (Graham NC/Graham) added 10.

The Pride led 36-32 at halftime. For the game, CNU out shot GC 53 percent (31-58) to 36-percent (25-69). The Captains also led in rebounds 45-32. The visitors, however, forced 25 turnovers and committed just 13. Additionally, The Pride had another strong day at the free throw line (20-26).

“This has been an unbelievable season,” said GC head coach Jason Tuggle. “We battled through adversity and prevailed when we didn’t play that well. That says a lot.”

The two point margin is the closest of GC’s 24 wins. The next closest was a 7 point win at NC Wesleyan last month.

Chelsea Schweers posted a game-high 29 points for CNU (19-6, 14-4).

GC will host NC Wesleyan for a USA South quarterfinal game on Tuesday night at 7:00pm. As a conference event, admission will be charged. General admission is $6. Students and seniors are $3. GC student activities will cover the cost of students with their Pride Cards.
