Quaker men do it again, with a win over Randolph College

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Rhett Bonner scored 11 of his game-high 18 points in the second half in Guilford College’s 68-52 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over visiting Randolph College in the both teams’ regular-season finale.

The Quakers’ eighth straight win earned Guilford (21-4, 14-2) the top seed for this week’s ODAC Tournament, which starts Tuesday with opening-round action on campus sites. The Quakers will play in the quarterfinals Friday night against either Washington and Lee University or Emory & Henry College in the Salem (Va. ) Civic Center. Guilford also won the 2007-08 ODAC regular-season title.

Randolph (6-18, 3-13 ODAC) held a 34-31 half-time lead that grew to five after Caleb Pearson made two free throws for the Wildcats with 16:49 left in the game. Guilford responded with a 13-2 run over the next 4:26 to open a 47-41 advantage. Bonner scored nine points during the decisive run, including two of his three three-point baskets.

Randolph’s Timothy Clarke drained a three-pointer with 10:01 left to make it a 47-46 game, but Guilford clamped down defensively and held the Wildcats to one field goal over the next six minutes. Guilford outscored their guests 12-2 in that time and sealed the win with 11-of-13 free-throw shooting in the final 4:18.

Clay Henson (left) added 16 points for the Quakers and reached the 1,000 career-point plateau in the first half. He becomes Guilford’s 28th member of the 1,000-point club with 1,011 points in 83 games. Martin Stephenson added a career-high 14 points and five rebounds in his first start of the season and George Neville notched a double-double with 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds. Neville and fellow senior Mat Stanley were honored before their final regular-season home court appearances. Guilford played without junior center Tyler Sanborn, who averages over 15 points and 12 rebounds per game, but missed the contest due to sickness.

Pearson’s 13 points paced Randolph, which opens ODAC Tournament play Tuesday at Virginia Wesleyan College. Rookie Darrick Woods-Morrow(Northeast Guilford) added 10 points and a game-high 11 boards before his hometown fans.
