ACC Coach-of-the-Year: Men’s Basketball

Who would you pick if we were making the choice today?

Oliver Purnell:Clemson-He hasn’t lost a grip on this team yet and he has been through a lot this season. Needs to win tonight to keep the nod and he has a key Player-of-the-Year candidate in Trevor Booker.

*****My vote right now goes to Oliver Purnell.*****

Al Skinner:Boston College-Has his men at the 20-win mark and the Eagles are 8-6 in the ACC. Very good numbers and BC beat North Carolina and Duke, the top two in the current standings.

Dino Gaudio:Wake Forest-Had the Demon Deacons ranked #1 in the country and they beat North Carolina, Duke and N.C. State. Has the most unknowns in guys like Jeff Teague, James Johnson and Ish Smith, but the Deacs are still on a pace that would take them to the level of the Sweet 16 or the Elite 8 this season and that’s probably a year or two ahead of schedule. Jeff Teague POY candidate.

Leonard Hamilton:Florida State-Hamilton has Toney Douglas and the Seminoles are threatening to finish in the top tier of the ACC, at fourth or better in the final league standings. Don’t forget Hamilton when it comes time to cast your vote.

Mike Krzyzewski:Duke-The Blue Devils don’t have a center and they have changed point guards more times than Barack Obama changes his stimulus plans. Coach K won’t get many votes, but again with no true center, his guys are playing way over their heads. POY candidate in Gerald Henderson.

Roy Williams:North Carolina-These fellows have been through so much this year with all of the injuries and team displacements. Roy deserves a freaking break don’t you think and if the Heels get by Duke this weekend, they will be your ACC Regular Season Champions again. No promises on the ACC Tournament though…….POY candidate in Tyler Hansbrough and maybe Ty Lawson, what do you think?????

Two to consider:
1)Skip Prosser:He built the current Wake Forest team.
2)Dean Smith:He still has a hand in everything that is Carolina Basketball. He still has an office in the Smith Center, not too far from where the team practices.

Current Standings:
School Conf. Pct. Overall Pct.
North Carolina 11-3 .786 25-3 .893
Duke 10-4 .714 24-5 .828
