UNCG alumn Hines named MVP of Vanoli Cup‏

CREMONA, ITALY – Former UNC Greensboro star Kyle Hines was named the tournament Most Valuable Player after leading his Prima Veroli squad to a pair of upsets and the Vanoli Cup championship Sunday night.

Kyle Hines, pictured here in a game against Davidson last season, was named the Most Valuable Player of the Vanoli Cup on Sunday after leading his team to a pair of upsets and the tournament title.

Playing a workman-like 38 minutes, Hines had 20 points, nine rebounds and five steals in Sunday night’s final, a 79-68 win over Vanoli Soresina. Hines had one of his tougher shooting nights of the year in going 5-of-13 from the floor, but was 10-of-12 at the foul line. Former Rhode Island standout Dawan Robinson added 15 points and 11 rebounds for Prima Veroli, while former Boston College star Troy Bell had a game-high 21 points for Vanoli Soresina.

In the semifinal round, fourth-sseded Prima Veroli knocked off top-seeded Cimberio Varese, 97-92. Hines had a game-high 28 points, going 13-of-19 from the floor. He added seven rebounds in the 30-minute effort. Robinson added 24 points and seven assists.

The Vanoli Cup is the midseason tournament for Lega Due, featuring the top four teams at the midpoint of the season. This is the fifth year of the Vanoli Cup.

Hines is averaging 17.4 points in 22 league games this season, 15th in the league. He is shooting a league-best 64.8 percent from the field as predominantly a low post player in Italy’s second division league. He has scored in double figures in 21 of 22 games, while also averaging a league-best 9.3 rebounds, 1.9 blocks per game, which ranks second in the league, and 2.5 steals.

Prima Veroli, in just its second season since moving up to Lega Due, is tied for third at 13-9 with eight games remaining in the regular season.
