High School Baseball Report

Tony Sutphin reporting:

NORTHEAST 4 EASTERN 3
Some college is getting ready to get a steal – anyone that still has spot for a 2009 pitcher should look no further than Taylor Atkins – he is consistently at 86-89 and has command of all his pitches as he demonstrated this week, when he and Zach Moore (2009) combined for a no hitter. Zach is another sleeper. These two kids can pitch at the next level. Taylor also added a walkoff homer in the Eastern game – pretty good start to the spring.

NORTHERN 22 SMITH 0
Looks like JB is going to need a little time to turn things around at Smith, Northern is going to be much better this year but 22-0
Surprise surprise my man George Carter with a bomb, maybe he could graduate early like Levi and join the Heels early, he is mature beyond his years on the ball field.

RAGSDALE 1 GRIMSLEY 0
Bennett Hixson pitched a complete game 1 hitter facing only 21 batters, but the story here may be the scouting report to try and compete with Ragsdale. Ragsdale has a D1 player at just about every position and left handed Taylor Lee held them to one hit, Taylor walked four in the first inning providing the only run for Ragsdale. Taylor’s fastball was 72-75 all night and he mixed in about 1/2 change ups and sliders to keep Ragsdale out in front all night. He is left handed with that along with my man Gabe Dimock behind the plate probably slowed down the speed of Ragsdale. Coaches try slow slow and slower till Ragsdale proves they can adjust, great hitters have always had a tough time with the junk. GBC Prepstar Ben Fultz appears to be leading the Tigers offensively as he has already a HR and several extra base hits.

VANDALIA CHRISTIAN – RECORD 2-1
2011 Grad Jonathan Bethea is ready to lead Vandalia this season as they are off to a good start. JB recently competed in a National Under Armour Showcase where he was named best Underclassman Prospect and Best Pitcher. JB hit 86 on the radar gun, that from the left side along with his 6’3 frame will have college coaches coming to see him play this summer for GBC Prepstars.

SOUTHEAST 2 SOUTHWEST 1
Ethan Ogburn (NC State signee) pitched a complete game gem, and it was a tough loss for him and the Cowboys. Bo Rein and Will Kellum seemed to swing it best for the Cowboys, while Brian Webb laid down a two out bunt single to tie the game at 1-1, and then Tiger Miller laid down a safety squeeze that when the throw just got by the first baseman, allowing Colby King to score the winning run in the bottom of the 7th. Josh Tobias went 5 innings and looked good, this sophomore is a great kid and can mash – college coaches will be heading down old 421 to see him soon!! Ogburn struck out 11 on the night and I think the Cowboys struck out 10 times themselves. SWG has been hit by injuries but hopefully Cal Sutphin and Elliot Slack will be back and at 100% this coming week as the Cowboys have 4 big games including Friday night at Ragsdale (could we see an Ogburn – McBride matchup – if so I bet some pro scouts will be there to see all the plus 90 mph fastballs!!!!!!

NORTHWEST 16 WESTERN 10
Pitching is supposed to be ahead of hitting but not at Western Friday. Macon Smith (WCU commit) dropped a 3 run bomb, and smooth fielding shortstop Casey Jones went 2-3 (see Casey this summer for GBC Prepstars – he will be a big time D1 sign for someone – 2011 grad). All the Western hits could not keep up with Northwest is deep lineup as Glen Clemmons hit a big 3 run homer to keep Northwest in command.

NORTHWEST 11 NORTHEAST 1
On Saturday Northwest was raking it again putting up 11 runs on a great Northeast team. Stephen Mekita got the win on the hill and word is he is throwing ched this spring! Leading Northwest at the plate is shortstop Corey McKinney going 2-3 and Robbie McIntosh (UNC Asheville signee) 3-4. Alex Swim (Elon signee) was 2-4, and 2b Tommy Houston went 2-3 as well. For Northeast Taylor Atkins stayed hot going 2-2 again!!!!

RAGSDALE 7 NORTHERN NASH 0
On Saturday at the Impact Invite in Cary Ragsdale completed an undefeated week – the pitching staff has yet to yield a run. David Coffey pitched a complete game no hitter backing up Bennett Hixsons 1 hitter from Friday. These two guys are not even the best Ragsdale has – State Championship should be a given if they stay healthy although 3A has many top teams – this should be the year for Ragsdale. Ben Fultz again had a double and triple and Kyle Brandeburg (Campbell signee) was 3-4.

LOOK FOR WEEKEND COLLEGE REPORT ON OUR LOCAL GUYS EARLY THIS WEEK

  1. Good job, Tony…nice, objective reports on the various local games of interest. Will we see this coverage once the season hits full stride?

  2. Baseball Fan- I guess Tony didn’t say enough about your boy. You got your new coach so please ease up.

    GREAT JOB TONY!

  3. No kidding. Looks like a forum to push his prepstars program. A couple of these kids should hire him as his agent. A few are talented enough without this. I like the idea of this coverage, just be objective. Just need the facts and not opinions. I’m sure others will post opinions. Right now it has a tabloid feel.

  4. I feel that Sutphin was objective. There was praise given to players from many teams. There were numerous guys mentioned that have nothing to do with Prepstars. I personally enjoy some commentary, perspective and opinion. Without it, you just have box scores….. Andy Durham & Tony Sutphin, great job.

  5. I didn’t realize Tony was a paid reporter for GreensboroSports.com. Until he is I think he can report about whatever and whoever he like. Andy thought well enough of it to put it on the site. Some people will cry about anything. If anybody reads the News and Record they would know our prep sports coverage is not very good. Someone goes out of the way to do a write-up on area baseball and people start whining….how about do your own write-up and maybe Andy will post it. I am guessing that your son wasn’t mentioned so obviously the reporting must be biased. The truth is that a lot of the best players in the area DO play for PrepStars, so hince their names might be mentioned when talking about area perfomances.

  6. Tony is doing a super job. He has so many contacts that we don’t have and he is at the games on a daily basis.

This is providing a service that you won’t get elsewhere and it would be a shame for the kids not to get the attention and with Tony’s help and what we can gather by phone, E-Mail or from other web sites, we are hitting the ball pretty far right now.

I don’t care about the parents, your day has come and gone. This is for the kids to get a chance to have their names and accomplihments out here where somebody can see it and they( the kids) can get recognized.

If we have missed somebody let us know before you start complaining. My goal is to see how much we can cover and not what we can put out there and just get by with.

We have set the bar high and we need to keep on going with Tony, Justin, Alan, Jason, Randy, Ray, Tavis, Keith , Andrew, Mark, Kirk or whoever will send us information.

We’re not worried about the people that don’t like what we are doing, there are plenty of folks who appreciate it and they want more and that’s what we are after….

  7. I can see where some would say it has a slant to it but at least it’s some coverage. If you want your son/daughter mentioned you can always post.

  8. Sorry Backer I thought Macon had verballed – i think that it was posted on another site.
