Great story on Dudley’s McIvor and Britton, plus Saturday re-cap from Greenville Reflector

Wow! What a beautiful show by the Lady Panthers of Dudley HS. They didn’t get much love from the Greensboro paper this year. It seemed to be all about Ragsdale. However, I wondered what was going on with the McIvor girl(Kiera McIvor). Why she wasn’t playing?

In the last 30 seconds of Saturday’s game she was sent to the scorer’s table to a round of screaming applause and screams of call a time-out; call a time out!

Coach Kris Britton called a time out with about 15 seconds remaining.

In went Kiera McIvor, into the arms of screaming and jumping up and down teammates. Dudley inbounds the ball to senior Helen Terry. Kiera McIvor is in the corner. Terry gets past her man and sends a beautiful pass to McIvor. McIvor fakes right penetrates left. She is met by a hard body foul.

The gym is now in oooh and quiet. Her teammates are rushing to make sure she is OK. She is fine. Six seconds left and she is now at the free throw line. She makes her two free throws to the thunderous applause of the crowd and teammates.

I am confused.

I found out that her appedix ruptured late January (I believe the story is she was in the hospital for 8 days) and has not been able to participate in any PE activities and was just released on Monday to participate.

The end was story book for both Helen Terry, the seniors, Coach Kris Britton and her staff, and the chemistry of the team. I see why she adores her kids.

Coach how wonderful of you to give the McIvor girl the opportunity to participate in the win.

Now Coach and Ladies go write the last chapter.

The quest for a state championship and an undefeated season ended for South Central on Saturday night.

But the Falcon girls’ basketball team and coach Mary Bryan Carlyle seemed to know their 89-72 loss to Greensboro Dudley in the 3-A Eastern Regional final at J.H. Rose High School carried with it many positives.

Dudley got a good deal of mileage out of a few spurts in the game — including a staggering 9-0 run to end the first half — and never relinquished the lead in the final two quarters to assure itself a spot in next weekend’s state title game.

But the South Central team which suffered its first loss in 30 games this season had its own strong moments, including battling into the lead four times in the second quarter.

Sixteen of Breonna Patterson’s(Dudley guard) game-high 27 points came in the first quarter alone, as Dudley led by six, 24-18, heading into the second period. But a 5-0 South Central swing in that quarter trimmed the lead, and Danielle Butts drove the lane with 4 minutes, 25 seconds left in the half to put the Falcons in the lead, 28-26.

Butts hammered home 26 points to lead the Falcons and Haley McCorkle added 16, but the Falcons never managed to take a lead bigger than a single basket.

The momentum went Dudley’s direction for good in the dying minutes of the first half, when Chell Jackson scored in the paint to break a 36-36 tie. A steal by regional MVP Helen Terry made it 40-36.

After Ebona Goins followed up a missed free throw for another Dudley hoop, Porsha Roach landed two of three free throws to end the half, and the run, with Dudley leading 45-36. Dudley turned up the heat in the third quarter, opening a 64-56 lead by its end.

Terry finished with 22 points, and Goins and Desiree Drayton each chipped in 10 in the win.
