Ragsdale 1
Southwest Guilford 0
*****The Tigers(6-0) win it on a SAC fly by Kyle Brandenburg in the bottom of the 7th. A pitcher’s duel between the winner David Coffey and SWG’s Ethan Ogburn. Coffey had a string of 13 hitless innings going until the Cowboys broke that up and the Tigers now have five shutouts in 6 games and have only given up two runs for the season and both came in the same game.*****

Second tough loss for SWG and Ogburn, dropping the 2-1 game to SEG last Friday and now the 1-0 to Ragsdale tonight.

Ragsdale-SWG info coming in from Jim Modlin who was at the game……

More on Ragsdale-SWG:
From what we were told, this is the way most games are between these two schools. Ethan Ogburn (NC State signee) and David Coffey dominated last night. Ethan gave up a line drive single to Ben Fultz when he fell behind 3-1 in the count. Coffey allowed only two baserunners, a walk to Elliott Slack and a basehit to Bo Rein. Kyle Brandeburg was able to knock in the only run (unearned) in the bottom of the 7th with a shallow line drive to CF, allowing Walt Sparks to tag and score from 3rd. Walt had led off the 7th and got to second base on a throwing error. Liberty head coach Jim Toman was in attendance to see Ben Fultz, Brock Hudgens, and others. I think almost every starter on Ragsdale has D1 potential, and I think a couple are D1 football players as well. On the field last night were – Billy Stone, Ben Fultz, Walt Sparks, Desean Anderson, Mike Whited, Brock Hudgens, Cal Sutphin – all that played for some of the best GBC travel teams – they had some great times traveling around playing ball and it brought back some great memories to see everyone playing and competing at a high level.

Graham 8 Grimsley 4

Graham pounded out 8 runs on 11 hits to take the road victory. Tyler Wiles went 3-3 including a triple and 3 RBIs to lead the Graham offensive attack. Cody Dix picked up the win on the hill. Grimsley was led offensively by Tucker Rogers, Logan Dunn, and DJ ReEder. Michael Elam suffered the loss on the mound.

High Point Christian Cougars win another one now (5-0):
Cougars win wild one against Mountain Academy(West Virginia) 14-9 to grab their 5th win of the season.

Conner Scarborough cracked a 2 run homer in the first to help lead the Cougar attack.

Andrew Barnett went 2-3 with an RBI while Luke Zente went 1-3 with an RBI, 4 stolen bases, and 3 runs scored.

Joseph Powell picked up the win allowing only 2 hits over the 3rd , 4th, and 5th innings.

From Greg Johnson:High Point Wesleyan wins 20-1 over a team out of Raleigh. Will MEyers and Logan Self very impressive for HPW.

  1. Real pitchers’ duel at Ragsdale. Coffey went 7 innings, gave up 1 hit, 1 walk and struck out 10. Ogburn gave up 2 hits, 6 walks and had 7 strikeouts. Sparks was the winning run and got on base in the 7th on a wild throw to first that put him on second. Wild pitch got him to third where Kyle Brandenburg sent a one out line drive to center to score the game’s only run.

Ragsdale moves to 6 – 0 and pitching staff has given up 2 runs in the the 6 games, 5 shutouts, a no-hitter and 4 one hitters. Coffey, who had an outstanding sophomore season and then had an injury plagued junior year appears to be back at full strength. In his two starts, he has given up 0 runs and only 1 hit (a seventh inning single tonight) while striking out 14 and allowing 1 walk.

  2. so great to see Coffey having a good year. It hurt to see him struggle last year and his injury was a big reason why Ragsdale faltered down the stretch. They are really fun to watch when they are pitching and playing defense so well.

  3. I was not there (traveling) but I understand Cal played well. Nobody hit the ball hard for either team. It was a pitchers night. Ragsdale had a lot of baserunners but could not get a hit when it needed it most. Hats off to Ethan for his pitching. A good game between two good teams.

  4. michael, how about some intelligent additions to the discussion? please, stop embarassing your family and friends

  5. Whirlies are playing hard, they need a win to get some momentum going. Keep your heads up, it will turn soon enough.

  6. That happens when you have two quality pitchers on top of their game. Both guys had good location and good off-speed stuff to go with their fastball. They both mixed it up well and located. Some days the pitcher wins the battle. Yesterday that appears to have been the case. They both threw very well.

  7. About the Grimsley Game… A horrible pitching performance by Michael Elam. What in the world is this kid doing pitching on varsity? Although he had a few bad defensive plays behind him early in the game, he was completely lit up by Matt Roberts and company throughout his whole outing.
