  1. Just came from the game and the nighthawks did what they had to. I don’t think they played their best game, but they did enough to win. McCain had some big buckets and some huge rebounds. J Frye was a monster on the boards. That is normally not his forte, but he was huge. Northern was clearly the better team, but Forestview played hard and stayed in the game until late in the fourth quarter. Michael Neal had some great hustle plays and made some great passes. Lawson had several dunks and at least 5 big blocked shots. Asad played great defense and also knocked down a couple of threes. Congrats to Coach K and the boys! Well done!

  2. Coach K and the Nighthawks did a wonderful job. I saw some highlights and Forestview did not look like they belong on the court. Great Job.

  3. Just came from the game great performance from the nighthawks.Been following this team all year and Coach K good luck special made purple sports coat. History has been made at Northern Guilford to win a basketball state tiltle in only its second year as a varsity team.
And whats scary all the players come back. Proud to be a nighthawk.

  4. Congrats Nighthawks! What a great game. I was just in awe at the poise these young men have. They played like real champions, State Champions that is. It was definitely a team effort and I know Chris and Mike got the awards. And those boys deserved them but I must shout out Jonathan Frye and Jacob Lawson. Jacob came with the big dunks and big blocks. Jonathan came with the poise and control. Even though each player is a standout, they blend and compliment each other well. There were so many good highlights from all the players that I can’t begin to name them all.

After watching the Dudley girls and Northern boys play, I walked away watching the best, hands down. It was a pure pleasure to watch these two teams win the highest title. State Champs!!

  5. We did it as a team. Theres no i in northern guilford we all got here as 16 players. No individual got us to the championship and no single player won the game for us. we are the night hawks. And we play together as one. im proud of my teamates and my coach hes been through alot and hes done alottt for us. Only way we could repay him back is become state champs and thats what we did i love my teamates and most of all i love the fans that drive hundreds of miles to support us thank you. And o want to thank god for everything thats happen in my life.

    #3 Neal

  6. Shyige is my son. He is attending Northern Guilford next year. Michael Neal, you are right, you all did a fantastic job. I remember being mad because Dudley lost to Kinston and I went up to Jacob Lawson and I asked him “annihilate Kinston for Dudley fans.” I just wanted the best team in the 3A to win. They did. I am happy that I have seen the Nighthawks play all year and they were superb. I see a repeat too.

Shyige, I told you to proofread your work.

  7. 1st – Congrats to Northern Guilford on a great season and a State Championship! Great job by players and coaches
2nd – Thanks to all Northern Fans for helping our girls pull out a win. As I looked around the arena in crunch time last night I notice that the Northern fans were cheering for our girls too and I think it had to help.

  8. Dudley Fan,
Your girls deserved the support from guilford county. It was a pleasure to cheer on the girls. We were surrounded by forestview fans but we didn’t care! They played great basketball. And I believe we owe the dudley fans the same thanks. I saw many blue and gold in the stands cheering for us. At the end of the day its all about the kids. Both teams played their hearts out. I know it was worth the trip and money well spent

  9. Great job Dudley girls and Northern boys!

Also, glad to see the Mt Tabor boys take home the 4A trophy. Looks like Page gave them their only loss and also toughest game of their tourney run.

  10. I have watched the Dudley girls for the last two years as a Nighthawk fan. There was no way I was going to miss that game. I was rooting for the Panthers as were all of the others from Northern. Great day all around for the Triad.
If you were at the game last night, you got to see something special. A 13 year old little kid in a tee shirt, shorts and some high top sneakers came out and sang the national anthem. This kid was incredible. The crowd was going nuts. Even the players were amazed. I think he came in second in the MVP voting.

  11. I for one, value hardwork and dedication to high school athletics and seek to maintain the integrity of high school sports.

That said, I think it’s time I dust off my handy ole’ blacklist………..

  12. In response to AD Lee, not sure what you are trying to accomplish by your ending line”dust off my ole’ blacklist”,but I would hope that with all the talk of lawsuits going around in the newspaper that you would not be so ignorant to post your name{if this is Page’s AD Lee}. As for you Dudley Stud, not sure if you are being funny with the phrase {money can buy},but if you are hating on Nothern, then I guess you are upset that Dudley is no longer the big boys on the block. We all know that Dudley has used the academy in the past to “influence” kids to come so they could help out the basketball teams as well. Before you go off the deep end, I’ll give you one of many in an example. There is a kid that plays at UNC now that was in Smith’s district but played at Dudley so that shoud be enough to make sure you don’t throw stones when having a glass house.I don’t live in Dudleys nor Nothern’s district as you have probaly figure out with my last statement , so leave these kids alone.

  13. I doubt very seriously Dudley “used” their magent program to influence anyone to attend their school. Dudley and northern are 2 different schools. I don’t think northern has any magnet programs as of yet. As far as I know, Dudley has a magnet program that any kid in the county can apply to and if accepted, they can elect to attend. I know of a couple of excellent footballers from Dudley that have gone on to play collegiately at Wake Forest. Those guys had some of the highest GPAs in their respecttive classes so these aren’t just run of the mill athletes; these are SCHOLAR athletes.

Further, Dudley has been winning titles long before northern OR SMITH have even been in existence. No one from Dudley really cares what northern guilford is doing as we are leaving the 3A ranks as champions——2 consecutive Men’s basketbal state titles, 2 consecutive football state titles and 1 Ladies basketball state title.

By the way, smith has magnet school academies as well so kids could apply to those programs if they chose to. Bottom line is smith is nothing more than a high school wasteland both academically and in athletics and nobody really wants to go to school there. The Clavon Ingrams, Sam Grooms (transfered to Northeast) and Bob McAdoos of Smith’s glorious past are just that, the past.

  14. No one cares what any of you people think……….idiot Page fans, whiney grimsley fans, lousy NE fans with sour grapes, clueless NW fans and of course, the ALL MIGHTY spoiled dudley fans can all kick rocks.

    We made history yesterday.

    Go NightHawks!!!

  15. This Northern issue is interesting and from what I just found online there are some questions to be asked. http://www1.aoc.state.nc.us/www/calendars.Officer.do?index=Next+25&start=0&navindex=0&agency=&defname=mccain%2Cc&submit=Submit+Query
That is the link to the North Carolina Courts System in which a Northern Basketball player has a first appearance court date set for April 22. The charges are Disorderly Conduct and Communicating Threats. The officer listed on the charges appears to be the School Resource officer at Northern meaning this would have happened at school. Having an understanding of how much time lapses between the offense and the first appearance it would appear that this occurred during the playoffs at some time, perhaps a week or two ago.
If it was bad enough for charges to be pressed I would have to think that it would have warranted some kind of action from the principal at Northern. However, I did not hear of this player missing a game for his actions. I understand we all make mistakes and I am not trying to call out this young man for a mistake he may have made but I believe it speaks to the Northern Principal and how he runs that school. I wonder if all students there would have been afforded the same leniency.

  16. Without going into some long drawn-out article, I just have to say I love these kids and what they did for our County and for local sports scene.

All the Northern kids are great and the Dudley girls are the best.

Being at the games and watching how hard they worked, NG and Dudley earned those titles and they deserve them.

Michael Neal you are a class act and you played your tail off as did your teammates and thanks Michael for your comments here on the site.

Northern, Dudley, Page, Grimsley, Southeast, Northwest, Ragsdale and all the other schools have made this web site/blog what it is today and we say thanks for the memories.

To all the kids and one more “Shout Out” for little Helen Terry……Great Job and Congratulations…….

  17. Not that it is any business of yours . That player was punished and did miss several big games and no it was not during the playoffs. I think it is really a shame you feel the need to drag this kid throught the mud. You did it with a mean spirit just looking for something to gossip about.
There has only been one perfect person on this earth and they nailed him to a cross. Knock the parents and coaches all you want leave the kid out of it. All they have done is work their butts off.

  18. No Kidding, you must quit fooling yourself with,”you doubt that Dudley uses it’s magnet program to influence kids.” Answer the question, did he live in Smith district or not or better yet why not ask him if it was for the “program” or to have the best chance to go to UNC on a basketball scholarship? If you think for one minute it was for the program thaen I know you for sure are not anywhere near being a scholar. I am not saying that Dudley don’t do alot of good for kids, but don’t think for one minute that they are squeaky clean.Don’t be that ignorant.

  19. If you are going to post a link please make sure you have FACTUAL information. I really can’t believe yall are defaming this kid for no reason. Just because he’s a good basketball player? Mr Yeager does NOT give special treatment to athletes and this did NOT happen during playoffs. Not even this month or last. I would say more but its nobodys business but the athlete and his family. We really need to be careful on the accusations we throw. Especially the false ones.

  20. This is to neb…..

It is amazing that you would make this statement “I would have to think it would have warranted some kind of action”. Who are you ?

To set the record strait, this situation happened monts ago and was handled by law enforcement, Northern school officials, and the basketball coach, all with disciplinary action. Because you did not here of “How it was handled” forgive us if we did not notify you.

You also stated “I’m not here to call this young man out” but you did. We have all made mistakes or had bad judgement or did thing in the heat of the moment we regret. The only difference is we did not have somebody bolgging about it to everyone. This CHILD made a mistake and his situation has been handled and he is regretful of his actions. If you want to be concerned about how these adults handled this situation then write on but you are a sorry individual to expose this CHILDS mistakes for everyone to see. You must have alot of bitterness inside you and I truly feel soory for you. YOU ARE A SORRY EXCUSE OF A MAN.

Now back to the REAL reason for this article.

Congrats to The Nighthawk Basketball Team, to Coach K, and to award winners Christian “BIG GAME” McCain and Michael “ALL DAY” Neal.

    *********************NIGHTHAWK NATION REIGNS********************************

  21. Eagle89:

I never said Dudley was squeaky clean. I simply stated that the Dudley kids work very hard in the classroom and in athletics and have been doing so long before smith and northern were in existence (ex. from Charlie Sanders & Lou Hudson to Brendan Haywood and Kenny Okoro)

I also stated that Smith was a dump and that’s my opinion. Why do you think there has been so much “white flight” in the last 20 yrs from the area surrounding smith since you were in school there back in the 80s………….food for thought.

  22. No Kidding, You just admitted that Dudley was NOT squeaky clean and in your first post you stated that some kids “transferred to Northeast”.We both know why . So we can agree that this “transfering” thing is not just tied to Nothren. My post was dirested to dudley stud who quote best team money can buy.If dudley had won the state championship with aplayer that suppose to be at smith now{we all know who this is} would there be this much assuming about Nothern goingon.I think not. My beef is not with you personally it is with all the haters that all of a sudden forgot that their schools have had some “transfers” in the past. That means you too Page.

  23. Shame to hear about McCain having criminal charges filed from his actions at Northern. What talent… Hope he doesn’t waste it. I Where are the mentors at Northern? Or have all you parents looked the other way? No longer are the days that jocks rule the schools, break the rules and get by with almost any thing. Attitude and personality still matters.

Jocks are now leaders and academic acheivers. History shows that many young men like McCains of the world are promised the moon when they are producing, but left high and dry when a better kid comes along. Parents, don’t let the coaches, administrators and fans determine what’s good for your kids. A cover up isn’t getting him the help he so deperately needs. This young man is crying for help. He has been ridden hard… and put away wet!

McCain seems to be fine young man, but, but, but we all hate to see fall hard. And don’t fool yourselves, he will be replaced, with the same promises that got many of them there in the first place, you can trust that!

    One last comment to address:
For the Nighthawk Fan that spilled foul names for pretty near every high school in the Guilford County School district including the All Mighty Spoiled Dudley fans, I quote. Well, it’s like this… Dudley is what it is…
They are not spoiled, they are a bonded family, they are community, they have deep, deep, deep roots. Most call it TRADITION!
Oh sorry, forgot you don’t have any yet… but good luck!

  24. Some people don’t want to see other people or teams do good. Smith would be able to compete in all sports if the kids wouldn’t transfer out. Most of them ending up at Dudley thru their academy LOL. We suit up what we have and play, you don’t hear us crying. I’m starting to see Dudley fans are like Cowboy fans always crying. People grow up some of you act like immature kids.

  25. To Jay, Sounds like you are a little devastated that your TRADITION is about to move to the other part of the county. You stated that “Dudley is what it is and they are a community”, Are you including the Smith community since you play with some of their players? Just wanted to know. Still fuming over getting dominated in three games against Northern with only getting 1 victory. Sorry to say but looks to me that theres a new sheriff in town.

  26. New sheriff in town——-how many times has Dudley met the “new sheriff” in town: Smith with Marvin Webster RIP much respect, GDS, SW Guilford, RJ Reynolds, Parkland, Glenn, West Charlotte, Trinity etc. Only Greensboro Day remains as an established consistently winning program for obvious reasons. Dudley has and continues to get it done year after year while everyone else fades away. We have nothing else to prove.

In 5 yrs or less, the northern basketball program will be in the same shape that the RJ Reynolds program is in right now as soon as too many “minorities” show up on campus. White flight will set in and coach K will follow the money to some sports academy like Veritas.

Dudley will still be on top.

  27. I think neb has it right here.

As someone who spends a great deal of time at Northern, it is very apparent that Mr. Yeager shows favoritism to those athletes. If my child did what these atheletes get away with, he would have been suspended long ago.

I don’t think neb is attacking the kid, I think rather he is looking at how they get treated vs those who are not athletes.

  28. I’ve been around basketball for a while in this area and one thing I do know for sure (EAGLES89) is every team has had transfers to come in their school and out of their school. Eagles89, you keep calling out Dudley but you had a player on your team this year from Dudley who played a major role. The best player you guys have had in the last 5 years, now at A&T was from Dudley. And I’m not trying to defend Dudley but you are calling them out just like everyone else is calling us out like transfering just started this year.

To your other statement “Sorry to say but looks to me that theres a new sheriff in town.” We are not a new sheriff, we are a new team in town but we’re not trying to take anyone else so called place, we’re making our own path. So eagles89, STOP HATING!

  29. My daughter attends Northern and the comments about Mr. Yeager are untrue. My daughter is an athlete, but she is also in the chorus and drama. Mr. Yeager is at every one of the performances and goes out of his way to converse with all of the kids. If you have had any conversation with him, he rarely talks about sports. He is focused on educating all of the children at Northern. Why do you think we have almost all honor and AP classes? Mr. Yeager put this system in place so that all of the kids can succeed. Stop by Northern and you will see Mr. Yeager amongst the students almost all of the day.

  30. Tom, most high schools have mostly Honors and AP classes. The academic offering at Guilford County High Schools is similar to each other. But being a new school I would not doubt that Northern may have fewer issues than some other schools………for now.

As to kids attending schools out of district, every school has some. I think the issue is not that it goes on but how it happens. Some schools have the Academy, some have IB programs and some have ROTC. There are ways to legally get in schools without moving to that district. If someone feels strogly enough then you should take it up with the County AD. Otherwise I’ll congratulate the kids for their efforts until I have facts to feel otherwise.

  31. Golden eagles of Smith,

” We suit up what we have and play”,,,,,now thats what High School atletics should be about.

believe it or not,,,the student athletes that are involved in programs with this attitude will probably walk away with more “Real Life Experience” and better memories than those who have been Coddled and Spoon Fed from birth by parents and coaches that must prearrange the kids life in order to avoid failure.

A recent article on Smiths’ Swim Team in the G’boro paper,,,was truly a testament to what high school sports should be.

Personally,, I would rather see this group compete and lose on the scoreboard ,,,,than watch a group of AAU players,,, that are assembled through any means possible by an egotistical group of so called adults,,, whose lone goal is to WIN the title.

Some Schools still try to do it the right way,,,to me,, they are the champions.

  32. IT SADDENS ME TO READ SOME POSTS ON THIS SITE. AS ADULTS, PARENTS, FIRENDS, COMMUNITY WE SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF OURSELVES. THE BICKERING ON HERE IS SHAMEFUL. WE TALK ABOUT SETTING EXAMPLES-WHAT KIND OF EXAMPLES ARE WE SETTING FOR OUR KIDS WHEN WE TEACH THEM TO HATE AND CRITICIZE EACH OTHER? ARE WE NOT A COMMUNITY FIRST? WHY CAN’T WE ALL BE HAPPY THAT WE HAVE TWO TEAMS FROM GREENSBORO THAT WON THE 3-A STATE TITLES? TWO GREAT TEAMS WITH GREAT KIDS. WHY CAN’T WE REJOICE IN THAT AND LET IT BE? LIFE IS HARD ENOUGH WITHOUT TRYING TO RAIN ON THE SUNNY PARTS OF IT- LIKE OUR KIDS’ (OUR KIDS AS A COMMUNITY) SUCCESS!!! LET’S REJOICE THAT THESE KIDS ARE DOING PRODUCTIVE THINGS LIKE SPORTS INSTEAD OF OTHER NON-PRODUCTIVE THINGS. EVERYONE HAS THEIR TIME TO SHINE. WE CAN’T ALL WIN AT EVERYTHING EVERY TIME. PART OF BEING A SUCCESS IS BEING ABLE TO ACCEPT THAT, AND BEING ABLE TO SHOW GOOD SPORTMANSHIP BY BEING HAPPY FOR OTHERS WHEN THEY DO WELL. DUDLEY FANS CHEERED FOR NORTHERN AND NORTHERN FANS CHEERED FOR DUDLEY AT THE GAMES ON SATURDAY. THE NORTHERN GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM WENT TO BOTH GAMES SO THEY COULD SUPPORT DUDLEY AS WELL AS NORTHERN. THERE ARE TOO MANY THINGS IN THIS WORLD, SERIOUS THINGS THAT WE NEED TO TAKE A STAND ON, FOR US TO BECOME DIVIDED ABOUT HS SPORTS, AND TEAR SCHOOLS AND EVEN WORSE KIDS APART. OUR COMMUNITY IS BLESSED WITH NUMEROUS TALENTED KIDS IN ATHLETICS AND ACADEMIA. LET’S CELEBRATE THAT!!!!!

  33. Neb, Concern parent you don’t have the facts. It doesn’t matter to either one of you. Tell your mothers they raised two F’ ing cowards. Me

  34. I am a student athlete at Northern Guilford, when ever I talk to Mr. Yeager he never mentions sports. The first thing he is concerned about is how I am doing in the class room. He doesn’t favor me nor does he favor any other student athletes. He treats everyone equally. He is always at conversing with students and always at school functions.

    So Get your facts straight.

Neb, you might want to stop telling everyone McCain’s business

  35. To paws4thecause, In case you didn’t know, the new sheriff i commented on played dudley 3 times this year and beat them handly 2 times{once by 20 yes 20 points and once by around ten}. The only victory your beloved panthers got was by 1 point and that was only after Northen blew a 15 point second half lead,so don’t act like dudly didn’t paly the new sheriff. And to your quote NGHS will be like RJ reynolds, I sure you hope that is true so Dudley can get back on top. To Northern Guy I guess your IQ is very weak because nowhere in my post did I say That Smith was not in the same catagory as the rest of the county schools in this transferring thing. EVERY school has them. I posted about Dudley because dudley stud posted best team money can buy so I was trying to help yall out by saying this transferring thing is just not tied to Northern. But since you got so defensive maybe you got something to do with the problem instead of helping with a solution.

  36. Why is a Smith fan commenting on Greensboro/Guilford County athletics? Do they still have athletics??????? Wow Last time I checked they havent won anything in basketball or football! Folks need to let it go, Northern won the state! Bottomline!!! Move on, get better!!! Smith fans need to be quiet, just like your athletic program has been!! LOL Maybe Reggie Peace will come back for the 14th time and take lump lumps like he in his last stint at Smith. Congrats to Northern on a great season and good luck on repeating next year!

  37. My family and I just moved here and we have a son that is 6′ ft 9 and have a vertical of 44 inches and he is going to the 9th grade. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be a great school to go to both academically and athletically.

  38. Rick,

You mean the fine folks over at Greensboro Day or the Veritas Sports Academy of NG haven’t contacted you yet??

  39. Hey Rick there is a house for rent off of willow rd across the street from Dudley. We would love to play against you next year. Good luck

    Rodney Broadway

  40. Congrats Nothern on a great job in championship game . Hey basketball fans out there don’t be hating on Northern for their success. Their coach spends his summers coaching little boys, along with making sure his high school boys are involved in aau ball through out the summer. So while the rest of Guildford county high school coaches are sitting on their asses during the summer, coach K is still working his ass off. This man is consumed by basketball and always thinking of how to maximize the best out of his players. Asad Lamot, Jacob Lawson and Micheal Neal i’ve known since their 11u days they have always played good b-ball, have always worked hard in developing their game continously, now its paying off. All of this is coming from a Red Raider fan.

    Red Raider

  41. you think he is the only coach in guilford county that does anything in the summer with his team? you need to get out more.
