Lyle Donaldson and Josh Montague help lead GC over Tufts, 5-1

Locals Lyle Donaldson and Josh Montague helped lead the Greensboro College Pride to victory in a baseball game played last night at War Memorial Stadium.

Donaldson is from Pittsboro’s Northwood HS and he plays summer ball for the Proehlific Power. Montague is out of Northwest Guilford HS.

Greensboro, NC — Tyler O’Neill (Columbia, Md/Oakland Mills) had three hits and winning pitcher Michael Manfro (Faquier, VA/Notre Dame Academy) did not allow an earned run as Greensboro College defeated visiting Tufts University, 5-1, at War Memorial Stadium on Tuesday night.

GC cored four runs on six hits in the seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie. Lyle Donaldson ( Pittsboro, NC/Northwood) singled to left field, scoring Clint DeHaven (Stephens City, Va/Sherando) from third base for the go-ahead run. Manfro completed seven innings on the mound, striking out six Jumbo batters, allowing one run on four hits, earning his first victory of the season.

GC improved to 7-11 and Tufts stands is 1-2.

O’Neill led Greensboro from the plate, hitting 3-4, one RBI. Kyle Moloney (Peterborough, Ontario, Canada/Holy Cross) hit 2-2 along with the game’s first RBI and a double for The Pride. Jacob Tomb (Arlington, VA//Washington-Lee ) rounded out the lineup with a 2-for-5 performance from the plate.

Manfro (1-2) allowed his lone run in the fifth inning when the Jumbos capitalized on an error at third base. Ari David lifted a single into left field to score Eric Catalanotti from second, tying the game at 1-1.

The first eight batters of the seventh inning reached safely for GC, accounting for the four runs. A string of five straight singles led to GC scoring two runs by DeHaven and Moloney. Tomb crossed the plate for the fourth run of the contest on a passed ball. O’Neill brought home the final run of the inning on a single into right field, scoring Parker from third on an unearned run.

Greensboro scored the first run of the contest in the second inning with a one out error that allowed Josh Montague (Greensboro, NC/Northwest Guilford) to reach base. Two batters later Moloney singled through the left side of the infield for the 1-0 Pride lead.
