Mitch makes it to the mound in the Majors: Atkins(NEG) gets the Call(start) for the Cubs

Mitch Atkins out of Northeast Guilford High School and the Greensboro Batting Center/Carolina Acceleration has been on the Chicago Cubs 40-man roster during Spring Training and he got the call to start last Friday, March 20 versus the San Diego Padres.

A kid out of Northeast Guilford, the son of Bobby Atkins and the brother of Taylor Atkins(currently a pitcher with the NEG Rams), and here he is on the mound as the starting pitcher for the Cubbies.

Continued success for Mitch Atkins and let’s hope they find a full-time spot for him sometime this season on the Chicago Cubs everyday roster/rotation(as a Starter or from the Bullpen).

Here’s the brief rundown on Mitch Atkins from the Cubs web site as we take a look at last Friday’s game with the Padres, where Atkins got the call for the Cubs. That has a nice ring to it, “Atkins gets the Call for the Cubs”.

Cubs on the mound: Mitch Atkins started in place of Rich Harden, who was ill, and gave up two runs on two hits and two walks over two innings. Carlos Marmol and Kevin Gregg, both vying for the closer’s job, each had scoreless outings.

Cubs at the plate: Milton Bradley hit an RBI single in the first, and Micah Hoffpauir hit a game-tying sacrifice fly in the third. Pinch-hitter Reed Johnson smacked a go-ahead two-run homer with two outs in the fourth, his first. Geovany Soto made his first start since returning from the World Baseball Classic, and was 0-for-2.

  1. We need to get a bus trip together and go watch Mitch when he is up with the Cubs full time later on this season. I am sure we could fill up the bus and maybe we could get Coach Ash to go along and lead our Greensboro fans into Wrigley Field.

  2. Congrats to Mitch! It is awesome to see him having so much success…..

It’s nice to see his dad and his brother mentioned, but I am pretty sure that he has a great mom too!

  3. You are right about that. So many times we focus on the players and the male influences that we forget the Moms. Great job by Mitch’s mom and she’s a key player too.
