Dave Telep talks about the upcoming Carolina Challenge

Dave Telep, who has put together the Carolina Basktball Challenge coming this Saturday to the Cary Academy, talked to the web doctors at accsports.com about his event and what it means to Telep and to the state of North Carolina.

Dave Telep well-known basketball guru:

It’s not my event, this one belongs to the good folks of the state of North Carolina.

Over the course of the year, the goal is to identify the 80 best underclassmen who are good players and help them gain perspective to make them recruitable. We do it under the guise of three games played by the best talent in the state. So you can either drive to each high school gym of the best players in the state individually during the year OR you can attend the Carolina Challenge. The average fan who wants to remain married would pick the latter. Games tip at 9:30 a.m. Saturday morning at Cary Academy.

Telep on some of the alums from this event?

Ty Walker was the star of the inaugural Carolina Challenge. He’s joined in the ACC by Miles Plumlee, Victor Davila, J.T. Thompson, Justin Watts and Reggie Johnson. Next year, alums C.J. Harris, Ryan Kelly, Garrius Adams and Mason Plumlee join them. John Wall, who is serving as a mentor this year, is a guy three ACC fan bases would love to add to the list. BTW, the current 2010 class that will be on display will have multiple future ACC players, led by UNC commit Reggie Bullock.

Telep explains/describes the event:
Is this like an AAU event or a showcase? Or is there more to it?

It’s a camp actually. The participants play in three games, listen to a speaker or two and go through skill development sessions. If you come, you might recognize the big fella helping out with skill work this year. He’s former N.C. State star Kenny Inge, who coaches at Cary Academy. The parents and guardians of the players are encouraged to attend an academic and recruiting seminar conducted midday.
