Greensboro Galaxy AAU team 16 and up won the championship game against a powerful star studded Midstate Magic team 68-65 on Sunday to avenge and earlier loss on Saturday 63-57.

Midstate Magic have a lot of great area players such as Allyson Cousin who attended River Mill and will be playing for High Point College this coming Fall. All Conference and All Regional 7 player Chevena Pickard of Page Senior High. All Conference player Capricia Small of Eastern Guilford and Honorable mention All Conference Kristin Crosby of Eastern Guilford. Shay Mebane of Cummings and a host of other rising seniors.

What Galaxy lacked in size in the post they made up with desire and tremendous hustle which has been their trade mark over the past few years as they won the Division II National Championship in 2007 and were Divsion I Runnerups in the Classic Championship game in Clarksville, Tennessee in 2008. Only three of the original players remain from that Championship team of 2007 (Brittany Drew, Desiree Drayton, Miranda Jenkins) and only Katrina Gibson and Demetria Jordan are from last years team).

This years team has added Portia Oakley (Page), Amerijah Jamison (Eastern Guilford), Chell Jackson (Dudley), Hannah Talton (Mendehall Middle), Valarie Beale (Weslyand HS) and Cissy. They had won earlier games against Lady Phoenix 73-25 led by Desiree Drayton 14 pts and 9 reounds, Miranda Jenkins 12 pts, Chell Jackson 11 points, 7 rebounds and Valarie Beale 10 points.

They beat a very good Mavericks team out of Chapel Hill 62-52 led by Brittany Drew 13 pts, Miranda Jenkins 12 pts, 6 rebounds, 4 assts, 4 steals Katrina Gibson 8 points and Desiree Drayton 7 points, 12 rebounds, 4 steals, Demetria Jordan hit a much needed three. Hannah Talton the youngest in the group scored 2 points in gaining some valuable experience.

In the Championship game that was very close all the way to the end the team effort prevailed and some big shots by Amerijah Jamison sealed the deal. Great way to start.

Championship Game box score:

Miranda Jenkins: 26 pts, 5 rebs, 6 assts, 2 stls, 1 blk
Desiree Drayton: 9 pts, 13 rebs, 7 assts, 1 blks, 1 stl
Amerijah Jamison: 9 pts, 6 rebs
Brittany Drew: 8 pts, 2 rebs, 1 asst, 1 stl
Katrina Gibson: 7 pts, 2 rebs, 2 assts
Portia Oakley: 3 pts, 2 rebs, 4 assts, 2 stls
Valarie Beale: 3 pts
Chell Jackson: 3 pts, 5 rebs

Andy, did you mean 16 & under? If so, their state regionals will be played this weekend and both of the above teams will most likely have there hands full with the Lady Pheonix Purple.

And that’s Whitaker’s Lady Phoenix 16u who won the Hoops and Dreams Champoinship 2 weeks ago. They played againest some good teams. I was surprized they beat the Lady Royals.

  • Confused said,

Why is Allyson Cousin playing if she is signed to play college ball next fall? Isn’t that illegal? Come on Brian, do you really need her that bad to win?

  • pokey said,

why are there 8th , 9th, 10th and 11th graders on this team?

    Pokey…

Pokey, we didn’t understand your question…what part did you not get? Do the math….It’s clear as rain… But here goes…just in case ….

16U means 16 years of age and under …
thus covering 11th graders that are still 16 at AAU registration.

The 8th grade issue is clearly simple 13-14 years of age depends where the birthday falls.. But it definitely qualifies for 16 and UNDER!!!!!

HOPE THIS ANSWERS YOUR QUESTION WHY
