Reggie Dillard and DJ Alston lead CP3 15’s to title

Chris Paul keeps on giving back and his CP3 15 and Under All Stars are another fine example. These kids won the title this past weekend in Knoxville, Tennessee and they did it with only 7 players. That’s something even CP3 might find hard to believe, but here it is and here’s some background on the tournament.

Chris Paul’s AAU organization, CP3 All Stars, is based out of Winston-Salem but the players are from all over the state, including several players Greensboro.

Both teams participated this past weekend in the Knox Vegas Heat Showcase in Knoxville, TN — most of the games were played on the University of Tennessee’s campus with the remainder at local high schools.

Reggie Dillard from Dudley and DJ Alston from Ragsdale are players that you know from around here and we have included the entire roster so you can get to know alll of the kids.

Thanks to Steve Shelton(GDS) for passing this info along to us and again, great job by the kids on both of the CP3 teams.

CP3 All Stars 15 & Under only brought 8 players to the tournament in Knoxville, TN. In their final game in pool play Saturday night they would be down to SEVEN due to Shane Whitfield injuring his knee. That meant that on Sunday CP3 would have to win four games in 8 hours with seven players in order to take home the title.

1st Rd: beat the Columbia Hoyas, 78-54.

Quarter Finals: beat the Atlanta Celtics, historically national power house AAU program, 67-66. Considered to be one of the better matchups during the tournament. CP3’s CJ Bradshaw hit game winning 3 with 2 seconds.

Semi-Finals: beat Birmingham Storm, 62-48.

Finals: CP3 played the Virginia Squires in the FINALS. The Squires looking fresher than CP3 jumped out to an early 14-7 lead. The remaining seven CP3 players fought to stay in striking distance and trailed by four at the half. Being aware of his team’s fatigue Coach Poplin tried to keep his team as fresh as possible by substituting as often and using some of his timeouts to give them breaks.

It seemed to pay off as they claimed their first lead with 2 minutes left in the 3rd quarter and leading by 2 going into the 4th. With five point lead and the game still in doubt with 3 minutes remaining came the biggest play of game — Reggie Dillard hit a big 3 from the wing and got fouled in the process. After knocking down the free throw CP3 lead by nine with less than 3 minutes remaining — the four point play seemed to knocked the wind out the Virginia Squires. CP3 made free throws the rest of the game to pull away and win 57-43.

Reggie Dillard led all scorers with 19 points. DJ Alston added 11 points and team high 8 rebounds.

Head Coach Andy Poplin quote, “I am so proud of how these kids fought! With a short bench, four games in one day with little rest in between they could have easily laid down BUT they didn’t. That says a lot about these young men.”

  1. Yes, but they added some players, They are not as good as they were 2years ago. they lost some really good players………..

  2. Reggie Dillard ia a fine young man. He might become the best basketball player to ever come out of Greensboro.
