HS Baseball Tonight

High Point Wesleyan 15
Grimsley 2

WP:David Anderson
LP:Taylor Lee
HR’s:HPW… Will Meyers-3 Home runs and around 7-8 RBI’s…..Myers is in the neighborhood of 10 HR’s for the season.
Tyler Hickernell-HR and it was his first of the season.

Coach Scott Davis of High Point Wesleyan told the High Point Enterprise earlier this year that in his 35 years of working with and being around baseball, that Will Myers, could be the best overall player that he has ever seen.

There were 3 pro scouts in attendance at today’s game and after the third home run by Myers they had seen all that they needed to see and they were on their way, headed for home. Myers third homer was to deep right field and bounced off of a car and came flying back over the fence.

Also saw Logan Self, Nathan Midkiff and many other talented HPW Trojan players and this was the first time I had the chance to see these guys play.

Grimsley’s Kory Shumate started off the bottom of the first with a single for the Whirlies and Grimlsey actually led this game at one time by a 2-1 score, but that was before HPW got cranked up and went ahead 4-2, then 6-2 and then 8-2 before the Trojans put 7 runs on the board in the top of the sixth inning and they went on to win the game 15-2.

Grimsley travels to East Forsyth on Tuesday(Metro 4-A meeting) and the Big rematch game will have Northern Guilford at Dudley in a key Triad 3-A Conference clash.

  1. congrats to wil myers, he is a well deserving ball player. good luck at the next level!!

  2. Andy,

I enjoyed watching some of this game with you. This is the 1st game I have seen Wesleyan this year but i saw them numerous times last year on their way to the State Championship. I have to agree with Coach Davis, This kid Wil Myers has all the tools. We will be watching him someday on MLB extra innings package on cable in the very near future. The kid is a catcher, pitches and throws around 90MPH, and plays 3rd base like Brooks Robinson. He has all the mannerisms of a true baseball player. 3 homeruns today is just another day at the office for Myers.Having Scott Davis as his coach has definitely put him at a very possible 1st round pick in the MLB draft this year.
Look for a feature on Wil in my next issue of Sports Carolina Monthly in the middle of May.

  3. Is Taylor Lee really going to UNC Charlotte to play on scholarship? or was that a fluke? seemed like it the way he pitched today, he was all over the zone all night

  4. It would have been a tough day no matter who faced HPW on Monday. Grimlsey tried several pitchers and it is going to be rough when you face competition like that of High Point Wesleyan.

Taylor Lee and Grimsley will have better days, but in this case you have to give the credit to HPW. It is not a questioin of if, it is the question of when, as you watch HPW walk up to the plate and get ready to take their at bats…..

When HPW gets those bats cranking they are going to be a tough team to tame. The Trojans are for real, it is just going to be a matter of how bad they want it this year.

Last year was the perfect season with the State Title and this year they will have to keep stepping it up if they plan to repeat. Remain hungry, it’s harder the second time around, but boy, it’s got to be great to be in the hunt……

  5. That’s the great thing about having a highly scouted player on your team. In Will Myers case, it is pro scouts because he already committed to USC. It doesn’t matter who the scout is coming to see. If another player has a great day in front of that scout (pro or college) that player all of a sudden is on that scouts radar. That’s why it really hurt guys like Dimock and Rose when Carter and Sutphin transfered out of Grimsley. Grimsley lost its appeal. Both guys would have attracted college scouts and Carter would attract pro scouts for the next three years. Young guys like Shumate and Reader are hurt too because they could have gotten on some scouts radar as freshmen.

  6. Your thoughts on Shumate and Reader are well taken. I’m no scout, but I have been very impressed with those two young men.

Every time I see Shumate he is hitting the ball and Reader is going to be something in the future. In fun terms people are talking Frank Thomas, Cecil Fielder, David Ortiz and that’s all for fun.

These kids need to keep on having fun and enjoying the game. The rest will take care of itself.

  7. I have seen both Carter and Sutphin play and neither have hit the ball has hard has the home run Reader hit in the championship game at Dudley. He hit a mjor league shot that will talked about for years. I think you are right Andy and not in fun terms he is the real deal.

  8. IS IT JUST ME? WHY WOULD YOU THROW TO MYERS THREE TIMES? ONCE I CAN UNDERSTAND, SEE IF HE IS HAVEING A OFF DAY OR MAYBE PRESSING IN FRONT OF SCOUTS, BUT PITCHING TO HIM THREE TIMES WITH THE SAME RESULTS. SOUNDS LIKE THE DEFINITION OF ….. OH WELL, WILL YOU OWE SOMEONE A THANK YOU NOTE.

  9. HPW started off slow, but their bats got hot…..you have to wonder if they are going to keep it together throughout the season. They are beginning to take it up another level. They are strong, top to bottom with the likes of Myers, Hickernell, Self, Ingram, Ferrante, Hendrix, O’Connor, and Corn. They should have beat Rocky Mount (lost 5-2) and gave Ragsdale all they wanted in the early scrimmage to start the season.

  10. Wesleyan shouldn’t get too excited cuz grimsley is way down this year and the pitching u saw was weak
