Southwest Guilford 12
Glenn 1

Southwest Guilford wins Piedmont Triad 3-A final over Glenn to take first place in the regular season. Double by Brock Hudgen, RBI single by Cal Sutphin, Bo Rein connects with two-run homer in the third, Sutphin adds double and more coming in later tonight…..(I was collecting the previous info from a text message and now here is more on tonight’s game.):

Southwest wins the outright regular season conference title with a convincing win over the Glenn Bobcats. On Senior Night the Cowboys celebrated four seniors, Will Kellam, Bo Rein (NC A & T Baseball scholarship), Seth Blair, and Ethan Ogburn (NC State Baseball scholarship).

The Cowboys bats and Ethan Ogburn were the story tonite. The bats were led by Bo Rein who had a home run, a double and four big Rbi’s. Cal Sutphin was 3-3 with a double, two singles, an rbi and 3 runs scored. Brock Hudgens had a double and a single. Ethan Ogburn had an rbi single and Will Kellam again added another big hit.

Ethan Ogburn was basically perfect on the mound – the games leadoff hitter hit a ball that looked to hit off his foot, it dribbled to the thirdbaseman who appeared to throw him out at first, yet neither ump saw it hit the runner and they ruled the runner safe at first with an infield hit. After that Ethan only struck out 13 of the next 15 batters, the other two were retired on infield ground balls.

High Point Central 4
Grimsley 3

8 Innings
WP:Tyler Ellis
LP:Tucker Rogers
Game Winning Run was a solo HR by Justin Lassiter in the 8th for HPC…..

The High Point Central Bison made the short trip to Grimsley Thursday night and defeated the Whirlies 4-3 in 8 innings. The game winning hit was a lead-off HR in the 8th by Justin Lassiter off Grimsley reliever, Tucker Rogers. It was a blast that cleared the scoreboard in centerfield. Lassiter also started on the mound and was effective in 4 and 2/3 innings. Tyler Ellis got the win in 3 and 1/3 innings of relief. Grimsley was led by Gabe Dimock’s 2 RBIs and strong defensive play behind the dish.

Ragsdale 10
SE Guilford 0

Nick Mcbride threw 4 innings of no hit/no walk ball and Bennett Hixson closed the 5th. Kyle Brandenburg led Ragsdale going 3-4 with a single, double, and triple.

Ragsdale— 10 12 1
SE Guilford- 0 1 2

Nick McBride (8-0) struck out five in four innings of no hit, no walk ball. Gave way to Bennett Hixson who got two outs before SE broke up the no hitter with a single to right.

Kyle Brandenburg was 3-4, DB, 3B, 3 runs and 2 RBIs. Went for the cycle in the fifth but got under the pitch. Ben Fultz was 2-3, Sac Fly, 4 RBIs, run. Ryan Andrejco was 3-3, DB, RBI, run. Mike Whited 1-3, DB, 3 RBIs. Joe Bright 1-2, run. DeSean Anderson 1-3, DB, run. Nick McBride 1-3, DB, run.

Lots of scouts out again to see McBride pitch. He didn’t disappoint. Ragsdale is 20-2, 11-1.

Rumor is, Sawyer Highfill is buying a house in Northern district and will be playing baseball for us along with his longtime buddy George Carter. We are very excited for this addition to our team and will be excited for Sawyer and his family to make the transition to NGHS

  • former ghs parent said,

probably not a bad move for anyone who leaves grimsley, unless they prefer rec ball. play more, win less.

  • its comical said,

what is that supposed to mean ghs parent?

  • Why Not? said,

ghs parent means that grimsley needs to quit playing seniors just because they are seniors. besides gabe and rose, there arent any consistent seniors. simmons definitely needs to get those other seniors out of the lineup and let younger guys, the future of grimsley, play. grimsley wont win another game all year, so why not let the young guys play?

  • parent/fan said,

I would just like to say congrats to the JV baseball program at SE Guilford.

They finished their season today with a 7-4 win over Ragsdale which turned out to be the game for 1st place in the conference. This brought their season record to 14-2 with only 1 conference loss.

    Great season guys.

  • its comical said,

i agree with you why not, although i do think grimsley will win at least another game

With the number 1 seed in the state playoffs secured the Cowboys play a tune up on Saturday evening at 6:30 at Finch Field against State Title winner Wesleyan. Then the conference tournament will begin on Monday with the semi finals on Tuesday at Glenn.

  • its comical said,

let me clarify, hopefully we’ll win another game. i never saw us losing to central. congrats to the central kids.

  • its comical said,

oh never mind ghs parent. after thinking on it, i think you’re saying that everybody gets to play, even if they stink. is that right?

  • joke said,

all of this really makes me laugh. HS baseball in Greensboro is becoming a joke and it is all because of this right here. If Highfill moves to Northern to play baseball, it will just remind us all of what is terribly wrong with high school baseball. Especially after all the problems Northern has already had. I guess the grass is greener on the other side. So keep patting your boy on the butt and telling him it is okay and always look for the better deal. Also, how often are parents at practice everyday??? Or at games, watching every pitch?? Or know anything about the game of baseball in itself?? Any coach is going to play the kid that gives them the best chance to WIN day in and day out. If that is not your kid, maybe you should ask your son why he isnt playing, and umm hmmm except the fact that he might not be better than the kid in front of him. Maybe he will be one day, but for the time being, he isn’t.

    this is a joke…

  • rumor said,

could it be highfill and carter end up at westchester?

  • GSO82 said,

Simmons is a great coach. Trust me, he knows more about baseball than anyone on here. He has played and coached at the D1 level.

  • additup said,

The most brilliant baseball mind in Greensboro, with D-1 coaching experience. What in the world is he doing at Grimsley?

  • baseballfan said,

Wow! That is a statement! Most brilliant baseball mind in Greensboro! He is a good one, but most brilliant!

  • dhs fan said,

Does anybody know what happen at the dudley and western guilford game last night.
    If so please check in.

  • Andy said,

I don’t think Sawyer Highfill is going anywhere right now. The comment seemed to be coming in with a little twist of sarcasm on it.

This is still Coach Simmons first season at Grimsley and there have been and will be a lot of ups and downs.

Last I heard Western was leading Dudley 12-6, but I was hearing a number of things last night and we have an E-Mail in that should help us track that down that score.

  • Updates4U said,

Western Guilford (Conference Champs!!) beat Dudley – lots of highlights, but notable items inlcude Joe Turkson hit 2 HR (1 was a grand slam), Macon Smith hit 1 HR. Good game all the way…both teams played well.

  • Ad4deacs said,

Let me say that any rumors about Sawyer Highfill going to northern are 100% fabricated. I find it interesting that that rumor appears yesterday and he sits tonight. Any connection? I certainly hope not.

  • Even More? said,

someone told me that former grimsley coach alan ashkinazy is looking into the northern head coaching job for next year. wouldnt be a bad move on his part especially with talk of new kids moving into the district

  • kbenton said,

No way they would hire him for that job.

  • doug said,

I am sure Ashkinazy would not apply for a coaching job within GCS. He/we are fed up with crybaby parents within the GCS system calling the shots. The results of allowing crybaby parents to run programs was seen last nite as Grimsley faced NW. Last year, every time these two teams met it was a highly competitive event. This year the crybabies’ kids played, and different story.

  • Alan Ashkinazy said,

Doug- You are exactley right! “Even More”- If you are going to make comments like you just did, why not post your real name and real E-mail and be held accountable.

  • Alan Ashkinazy said,

Kbenton- You’re a big man on this web-site. Why don’t you say who you are when you post?

  • Andy said,

Out of respect for Coach Smith, his staff and team at Northern, we need to let them finish this season before talk of next year starts hitting the FAN and out of respect for Coach Ashkinazy we need to let him run the batting center and leave him alone.

We do have speculations afloat it seems like 24/7 with the current issues facing the Guilford County Schools and the athletic departments, but need to keep in mind that the kids all still have to finish the work in the classroom and on the field and that does require a certain focus.

Conference tournaments start next week and I always wondered about them. It seems like they just get in the way of the start of the playoffs(the real deal), but I suppose they could change the seeds in some cases.
