WEST POINT, N.Y.– Army baseball followers are well aware of the talents possessed by sophomore shortstop Clint Moore.(Grimsley HS 2007) Nearly two full years into his collegiate career, people around the nation are beginning to notice as well.
Moore, who was named to the First Team All-Patriot League team last week while finishing second in the conference’s player of the year voting, has been named one of 15 semifinalists for the Brooks Wallace Award, presented to the nation’s top shortstop by the College Baseball Foundation.
The third Black Knight to earn Patriot League Rookie of the Year honors last season en route to a Freshman All-America citing, Moore hasn’t missed a beat this spring. The Greensboro, N.C., native is batting .401 with 16 doubles, five triples, nine home runs, 52 runs scored and 61 RBI. He has collected 116 total bases (the third highest single-season total in Army history and second among conference leaders this spring), while posting a conference-leading slugging percentage of .739.
He hit .433 with seven doubles, three triples, three home runs, 23 runs scored and 28 RBI in 20 Patriot League tilts, posting a .761 slugging percentage in those outings. Moore authored an amazing nine game late-season stretch, batting .581 with three doubles, three triples, six home runs, 21 runs scored and 26 RBI. He posted a 1.452 slugging percentage and a .667 on-base mark during that span.
Moore ranks fourth among Patriot League batting leaders, while also listing among conference leaders in base hits (8th), runs scored (T1st), home runs (4th), doubles (T2nd), runs batted in (2nd), triples (T1st), total bases (2nd) and on-base percentage (3rd).
The Brooks Wallace Award winner will be announced on June 13 in Omaha, Neb., in advance of the College World Series. The award will be officially presented on July 2 in Lubbock, Texas, as part of the College Baseball Foundation’s annual celebration.
Army, which defeated Holy Cross in a best-of-three Patriot League Tournament Semifinal series last weekend, is set to make its fourth Patriot League Championship Series appearance in six years on Saturday. The second-seeded Black Knights will square off against fourth-seeded Lafayette in a best-of-three series to determine the 2009 Patriot League champion and accompanying berth in the NCAA Regionals. The teams will play a doubleheader at West Point’s Doubleday Field on Saturday, beginning at noon. Game three, if necessary, is slated for 1 p.m. at Doubleday Field.
