***** Ethan Ogburn picks up a win to move Cowboys into 2nd round of the State Playoffs to face Anson County who beat Southeast Guilford. Ogburn gave up one infield hit and was in command all night. Brock Hudgens pitched the 7th for the save.

Brock Hudgens, Bo Rein, and Ethan Ogburn all got two hits a piece for the Cowboys. Cal Sutphin had a two rbi single and Wil Kellum had an rbi single in the Cowboys 4 run 4th that iced the game. Davis Inman and Andrew Pate also added singles.

Cowboys will be at home on Tuesday vs. Anson County in round 2.*****

WS Parkland 6
Ragsdale 2

*****Ragsdale had plenty of chances tonight. Had first and third with no outs in the second but a double play grounder got in a run but took them out of a big inning. Then got a two run lead in he third when Kyle Brandenburg got a two out double (a hit that tied the mark for career hits at Ragsdale) and scored on a Desean Anderson single but Anderson was left on second and it felt like Ragsdale should have had more. Then Parkland tagged Coffey for two solo homers in the fourth (Andre McKay and Tanner Beck) to tie it up and make it a game. Then the rains came.

Ragsdale looked to get momentum back in the fifth after Joe Bright reached on an error, stole second and made it to third on a bad pick off. Brandenburg was hit by a pitch but then got caught stealing for the second out and Ragsdale missed getting a run in. Ragsdale then had a chance to take the lead in the sixth but wasted a one out Ryan Andrejco double when he got caught in a run down after Rhodes fieled a come backer.

Ragsdale got out of a jam in the sixth when Hixson walked the first two batters but both got caught stealing on great throws by Walt Sparks. But then the wheels fell off in the seventh. Parkland batted around scoring four runs on two singles, four walks a hit batter and a wild pitch. Ragsdale got two men on in the seventh but couldn’t get a run across.

It was Parkland’s night and they deserve all the credit for a great all around win.

Nick Rhodes pitched a great game for Parkland. Complete game, six hits, seven strikeouts and only one walk.

David Coffey started and pitched five innings, giving up four hits ( 2 solo HRs) striking out three with no walks. Bennet Hixson relieved Coffey in the sixth and took the loss. Coffey should have stayed in, not to mention that Nick McBride never saw the mound.

Sad to see such a great team go down in the first round. Ragsdale will never see another team that loaded with talent. Hats off to Parkland. They won that game with a great effort.

And you really have to feel good for Tanner Beck who played huge – a day after seeing his father lose his battle with cancer. Tanner went 2-4, with a game tying solo HR in the fourth and a lead off single in the seventh and ultimatley the game winning run. Shows a ton of heart to take the field under those circumstances and play so well.*****

Mallard Creek 4
Grimsley 2

Mallard Creek – 4 7 0
Grimsley – 2 7 5

WP: Tyler McCarthy
LP: Kevin Rose
SA: Tyler Kenefick

*****As has been the case often this season, Grimsley was unable to capitalize on a solid pitching performance. Kevin Rose went the distance as Grimsley’s starter scattering 7 hits over 7 innings (2ER, 4 K, 1BB). But the Whirlies defense committed 4 errors in the third inning allowing 2 unearned runs to score. It would be the difference in the game. Grimsley also was plagued by baserunning blunders, costing themselves several scoring opportunities. Mallard Creek’s Tyler McCarthy matched Rose’s performance giving up 2 runs on 7 hits in 6 innings of work. The Mavericks defense was flawless.

Grimsley catcher Gabe Dimock ended his Whirlie career with another outstanding defensive effort behind the plate. Offensively, the Whirlies were led by DJ Reader (1-2, RBI), Sawyer Highfill (2-3, RBI), and Kory Shumate (2-3, run). Grimsley finishes the season 10-14.

Mallard Creek’s offense was led by Blaine Lewis (2-4, 2 2B, run, RBI) and Rico Aponte (2-4).*****

  1. why is there no big writeup on ragsdale? whenever they win, they get multiple paragraphs written about them. When they lose everyone trys to downplay it…whats up with that?

  2. I have a kid on the team so I don’t do game write-ups. Usually just give a score but Mark gives game reports. He put one on TBR and NC Preps. I am surprised he did not post one here. Maybe he will but I shouldn’t. Too easy to upset someone. You end up leaving a kid out or saying something about your own kid. It isn’t worth it. Plus, I post in my real name. Mark will probably give a summary.

Here are some of my comments on the game tonight from another board – These comments are from Mark who usually reports on the team. Andy, if posting info from another site is not allowed then please delete. Thanks, Kirk.

ANd you really have to feel good for Tanner Beck who played huge – a day after seeing his father lose his battle with cancer. 4. hats off to gabe dimock. he played his heart off as usual and left it all on the field. it is once in a lifetime that you will be able to play with a player such as gabe, he really is a special kid. he will do great things in college and in life. i feel very lucky to have played with him.

  5. I think Ragsdale might have taken this game a little lightly not throwing their stud pitcher McBride. Not taking anything away from Coffey he is a great pitcher aswell but I think in the first round you have to throw your stud. With McBride on the mound Ragsdale wins. I can also see how you would want to save McBride for the 2nd round but I still think you pitch him in the first because you secure the win, and other teams are pitching their aces in the first round too. They had a good chance to win it all its too bad they lost in the first round. Very unexpected!

  6. starting Coffey was not the problem, the problem was when it became a tight game he brought in the #3, then #4, then a jv pitcher. McBride should have been the first relief pitcher. Ragsdale brass thinks they are untouchable, just like how in the midst of all the recruiting controversy they laugh, They have two coaches on staff that coached for the Dirtbags (similar to Coach K and the Gators) and those guys recruited their top pitcher from the Dirtbags to the apt in Greensboro. I think they have another player or two that are ineligible due to residency. Karma’s a bitch.

  7. There will always be hindsight in a loss. But just for the record, Coffey had the lowest ERA on the team, well below 1.0. When he went out after the 5th inning the game was tied 2-2 and it remained that way through the seventh. He pitched well, giving up 2 solo home runs to 2 talented players.

As to the above poster. You don’t have the facts. The player you speak of lives with his father in Jamestown. Parents are divorced. Betcha didn’t know that did you? As to every other player, I have taken every one of them home in the last 2-4 years. I know exactly where they live and can almost recite their addresses for you. Most live in Adam’s Farm. If not there, Sedgefield or Jamestown. They have been playing together since Pinto and Mustang ball. You’re right, karma is a bitch. They’re close friends. Too bad lack of knowledge for you isn’t. Nice try starting a rumor. You’re just another poster who won’t use his real name who trys to start a rumor.

  8. his parents were not divorced when he came to Ragsdale – I know alot more than you Kirk, as a family friend. And you may have taken them all home because you are such a great guy, but one of your outfielders lives in HP Andrews district and has forever. He Blew has you there, not everone on here is here to start rumors, and rumors generally have some truth involved. ANyway I am sorry Ragsdale lost because it was a team that should have won it all – so I feel bad for those boys.

  9. DOes it really matter if there are “questionable” residency issues on a baseball team that lost their opening round game? I doubt it. Regardless, the fact remains that Nick should have opened. Being a coach, I hope that our coaches were knowledgable of the fact that Parkland was a “power” hitting team and the potential second round team was more of a “small ball” team. That’s why I was shocked to see David out there on Friday. No disrespect to him because he is a great pitcher and a better student and all around kid, but he does not throw 91+. I think David would have been the better choice for the potential second round team. With that said, what killled us on Friday was our lack of timely hitting. I think we only posted 5 hits and you certainly can not win a playoff game with 5 hits unless you have a pitcher only giving up less. 1-5 had all 5 hits and 6-9 went 0 for 12 if I’m not mistaken. That is the first time this year that has ever happened. The only player with 2 hits in the ball game came up all 3 times with no one on base. Can’t win a ball game like that. I guess the really confusing thing for me was the fact that in the bottom of the 7th with the score 6 to 2. 3 of the 4 batters to come to the plate swung at or made contact at first strikes!!!! That will haunt me for quite a long time.

  10. A similar fate came the way of Southeast Guilford when they lost in round one last year to Lake Norman. SEG had gone all the way to the finals the year before and fans thought it would happen again and then all of the sudden the Falcons were gone.

Ragsdale has a solid program and next year it will be tested in a strong conference with NWG, SWG, Glenn and others. The new conference may be a better baseball conference than the MPC.

I saw Nick McBride throwing against SEG and not sure he will go to college, he may be going straight to the pros….Excellent arm and a great kid and the same can be said for the entire Ragsdale program……

It just wasn’t their day last Friday.

  11. Nick signed with ECU but should go pretty high in this June’s Draft. In talking with his dad, “have to wait and see” is the status.

  12. I have taken every one of them home in the last 2-4 years. I know exactly where they live and can almost recite their addresses for you.

  13. I thought the book on McBride was that he was all over the place! Not a lot of strikes. Saw him once this year and this was the case. Who is to say that he would have been on against Parkland. Y’all can second guess all you want. I think Coffey was the right one. If McBride throws and beats Parkland then you all would be whining that Ragsdale should have saved him for East Rowan. Trust me, you would have.

  14. Your probably right. There are no excuses. We just didn’t get the job done. I just felt bad for all of the seniors and their families, who are searching for answers.

  15. The most walks McBride had in a game he started was 3. He came in for relief against SWG and walked 2 immediately. He performed better the last two years as a starter vs. a reliever. However he averaged under 2 walks a game this year. Not bad for a kid you say can’t throw strikes. In fact that was the biggest difference in Nick this year. he threw tons of strikes. But not sure it matters. Coffey is a strong pitcher. It could have gone either way. Plus when Coffey left the game it was tied 2-2. Coffey pitched well. It was just that 2 of the hits were solo HR’s.

A couple of you need to get the facts on the kids residency. The school AD took the iniative to meet with the County office to confirm decisions that were made years ago. Again, everything was in order.

  16. Baseball is a game where it all comes down to the guy on the bump! In this day and time, you have to have a second guy who can beat a playoff caliber team. A lot of teams in the area are going to find out tomorrow night whether or not they can make a serious run at a title. It just wasn’t Ragsdale’s night! You know how SE Guilford feels now. And no one is safe from the “stunner”. High school baseball is a short game. You can be in the bottom of the 4th before you realize that you are in a dogfight. And 9 of your bullets are already gone. Just like college basketball coaches break down 40 minute games into 4 minute games (just getting to the next TV timeout), a lot of high school baseball coaches need to do the same thing. 7 small games, otherwise known as winning the inning( you can’t sit around and wait for the big inning, it may never happen). It’s playoff time! One and done! Survive and advance! From pitch one to the last one!

  17. In the playoffs, you have to win the first game before you can worry about the next one. Not throwing McBride was a mistake, but hindsight is always 20/20. If Ragsdale would have won, then having McBride for the 2nd game would have been genius. Again, in single elimination you have to win the first game first. Use your best to win and then worry about the next game later. Ragsdale got caught looking ahead a little, but Parkland is a pretty good team in their own right.

  18. I feel bad for the seniors as well but I feel bad for all of them. While the juniors have another year, this is the year these two classes have been pointing toward since they were about 10 years old. Sure, the juniors have next year but it won’t be the same without this year’s seniors. This group has played together for a long time. Together they were a good team. And while some good players are coming back, you can’t begin to replace the seniors. They still have had a lot of great times together as well as a bunch of memories most kids never have.

  19. Hey its one of those baseball things–line drives are caught and the dribblers get through. I dont think you can second guess Ragsdale’s coaching staff–seems like they kept the same pitching rotation throughout the year because SE got McBride three times because we always played them at the end of the week. By the way hilarious–McBride throws alot of strikes, he is as tough as you will see. SE was in the same boat last year so we definately understand how tough it is but keep your heads up. I for one am going to miss those SE vs. Ragsdale battles as both schools move into different conferences next year but it was great while it lasted.

  20. Parkland played a great game and it was their night. With that said, Coffey threw well enough to get the win, the offense just struggled and didn’t get the job done. The relief pictures had been good all year long, just not on this night and that happens in baseball. As for all of these people complaining about why McBride was not used in relief, his strength is as a starting pitcher and not as that of a relief pitcher. From what I saw of Ragsdale this year the same relief pitchers were used in the same situations throughout and got the job done as stated before (just picked the wrong night to have a bad outing and it was basically in just 2 innings). The pitching staff at Ragsdale was great this year and is a huge reason why they won 22 games, so to all of those boys, I say great job!!

  21. first of all im that outfielder who lives in andrews district and i want get the facts straight. ive gotten permission from the county every years to ragsdale to play football and baseball and have the papers to prove it. so i would like for my name to be brought up in this conversation anymore thanks……..

  22. I know for sure that the ragsdale outfielder has a note from the county to play there

  23. The rags outfielder does have a note from the county to play at ragsdale and im pretty sure his dad is a football coach anyways…
