A belated congratulations to Coach Freddy Johnson

We were searching for this article for a while and our thanks to Bob Lowe the Sports Information Director at Greensboro College who came up with Greensboro College Hall of Fame info on Coach Freddy Johnson.

We tried to get this up on the site a while back to no avail and with Bob Lowe’s help here’s the news on Coach Johnson as he went into the Pride Hall of Fame just a few weeks back at Greensboro College.

John Fred “Freddy” Johnson, Jr. ’77
Hometown: Greensboro, NC where he graduated from Grimsley High School;

Degrees: B.S. in Physical Education; M.S. in Physical Education from North Carolina A&T State University;

GC Basketball Coach: Dr. Milton Reece;

Professional Achievement: Known primarily for his illustrious career as Director of Athletics and Boy’s Varsity Basketball Coach at Greensboro Day School where he has been employed since graduating from GC, he has also coached tennis, softball, track and soccer.

Most notably, Johnson’s boys basketball teams have won 7 NCISAA state championships and have been a state finalist 13 times. Following the 2009 season which featured an unprecedented 4th consecutive Little Four/Pizza Hut Invitational Tournament title (9th overall), he now has 750 career wins and a career winning percentage of 75%.

He has been an equally successful AAU boys basketball coach earning 3 top ten finishes including national runner-up. Johnson is a member of 7 community and professional organizations including the Greensboro College Board of Visitors;

Honors: Already an inductee into the NC Gaters Hall of Fame and a recipient of 17 PACIS Coach of the Year honors, he was selected to coach in 3 all-star classics and was awarded a Life Membership in the AAU of the USA. He also received the 2008 Greensboro College Alumni Excellence Award;

Other Career/Personal Highlights: For many years an outstanding tennis player who captured several USTA 4.0 singles and doubles tournaments locally, he resides in Greensboro with his wife Mary Marr and college-age children, Robert and Katherine who attend UNC-Chapel Hill.
