GUILFORD ADDS SEVEN MORE TO 2009 RECRUITING CLASS
Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College head football coach Kevin Kiesel announced the intention of seven more incoming students to play football for the Quakers Thursday. All seven students have made their deposit to the college and will enroll for classes beginning in August. They join 21 others who have already expressed their intention to attend Guilford and play football.
T.J. Evans (Durham, N.C.) lettered two seasons at Riverside High School for coach Todd Spell. The 6-0, 265-pound two-way lineman helped the Pirates to the 2006 PAC-6 title and a second-place finish in the state 4-A playoffs. His brother, Mario Dawson, plays football at Winston-Salem State University. Evans considered Methodist University, Wake Forest University, Wingate University and Gardner-Webb University before choosing Guilford.
Alan Harris (Oxford, N.C.) lettered two seasons at J.F. Webb High School for coach John Hammett. A 5-4, 165-pound tailback, Harris played for the Warriors’ 2007 Mid-State 3-A champions that reached the state’s East Region final. Webb made three straight state playoff appearances from 2006-08. Harris earned academic all-conference recognition and considered North Carolina A&T State University, Greensboro College and Winston-Salem State before choosing Guilford.
Ryan Keller (Conover, N.C.) lettered three seasons at Bunker Hill High School for coach Ron Turner. The 6-1, 270-pound lineman also played with the Bears’ baseball team four seasons and won two letters. He was a member of the National Honor Society and the Future Farmers of America.
Eric Martel (Wilmington, N.C.) lettered four seasons at Rosewood High School for coach Robert Britt. The 6-2, 215-pound running back/linebacker earned player of the week and All-Carolina 1-A Conference recognition. He also lettered twice with the Eagles’ baseball team and considered Barton College and North Carolina Wesleyan College before choosing Guilford.
Jordan Moss (Sylva, N.C.) lettered three seasons at Smoky Mountain High School for coach Dale Galloway. The 6-1, 250-pound center also played with the Mustangs’ baseball team for four seasons and won three letters. Moss earned All-Western Athletic Conference recognition in both sports and considered Emory & Henry College and Western Carolina University before choosing Guilford.
Derek Sullivan (Stanley, N.C.) lettered four seasons at East Lincoln High School for coach Mike Byus. A 6-2, 255-pound defensive lineman, Sullivan played on the Mustangs’ 2008 2-A state finalists. He earned All-Southern Piedmont Conference recognition twice and considered Lenoir-Rhyne College, Wingate, and North Carolina State University before choosing Guilford.
Brandon Thompson (Burlington, N.C.) lettered two seasons at Bartlett Yancey High School for coach Jason Phelps. The 5-11, 170-pound wide receiver earned All-Triad 3-A Conference and all-region recognition. The two-time team offensive MVP, Thompson considered Averett University before choosing Guilford.
Guilford concluded the 2008 season with a 4-6 overall record, 1-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quakers lost nine seniors from the 2008 team and expect as many as 43 letter winners back in 2009. Kiesel’s club is scheduled to open the season Sept. 5 at 7:00 p.m. against Greensboro College in the 13th annual Gate City Soup Bowl.
