New policies concerning Guilford County HS Athletics

Any thoughts on these policies pertaining to HS Athletics in our Guillford County Schools?????

from today’s News and Record at Click Here:

The Guilford County school board’s governance committee is in the process of hashing out concerns and reviewing comments on two new policies addressing student athletes and coaches.

The school board approved initial drafts of the policies on June 25. As currently written, the policies would do several things including:

Raise the minimum grade point average for student athletes from 1.5 to 2.0 after the first semester of their ninth grade year.

Require students who transfer into a new school sit out of school sports for 365 days from their first day of class at that new school. There are a couple of exceptions to this.

Require parents provide at least two documents proving their residency every year the student plays a sport.

Establishes an appeals process for families.

Require principals and athletics directors consider school staff and school system staff first when hiring head coaches. Nonemployees can be hired for coaching jobs, but the principal and athletics director must show they looked internally first.

Restricts any head coach or assistant coach from coaching children of the same age outside the school system or scouting for colleges or club teams or owning or working for a business that sells sports realted products.

Any thoughts on these policies and are we heading in the right direction with our new leaders Mo Green and Leigh Hebbard?

  1. Tough but overdue in my opinion. I would be curious to know the exceptions that allow a transfer without sitting out a year. Sometimes kids really do need to transfer, ie.. family physically moves and such.

  2. This impacts HS coaches coaching showcase and aau teams. Not just the Gator basketball group but it hits all showcase baseball including Impact. Does it impact Colt, Palimino, Legion and such? If so this could be bad. I always thought it was good that kids from the same school played for their HS coach in the summer.

  3. THIS IS CARZY, GREENSBORO DAY CAN DO WHATEVER THEY WANT TO HELP THERE PLAYERS GET BETTER. THIS IMPACT ALL SPORTS I THINK THIS IS A BAD IDEA. WE ARE THE ONLY CITY WITH THIS RULE OUR KIDS WILL BE LEFT BEHIND A STEP SLOWER THEN THE THE KIDS IN THE OTHER CITIES. MO GREENE PLEASE CHANGE THIS RULE AND DO WHAT YOU DO BEST WHATEVER THAT IS B/C YOU ARE NOT A LEADER SINCE YOU CAME TO TOWN OUR SCHOOL SYSTEM IS GOING TO THE DOGGS. WE DID’T HAVE SUMMER SCHOOL FOR THE 1ST TIME SINCE I BEEN BORN AND I AM NOW 42. WE NEED TO PROTEST THIS WE CANT LET MO GREENE TAKE OVER LIKE THIS. PEOPLE IN SPORTS KNOW HOW IMPORTANT THE SUMMER IS FOR THE KIDS AND HAVING THE RIGHT COACH. THIS GUY DO NOT KNOW WHAT HE IS DOING………THIS IS A SAD DAY IN G’BORO……

  4. Not trying to argue or pick a fight but how are our kids going to be left behind or be a step slower by not being able to transfer without sitting out a year? You can train and improve wherever you are.

I agree that private schools will be on a different playing field. Although Bishop McGinnis is already on the is 1 year sit out program. Greensboro day does not have a football team and their baseball team is fine but you seldom transfer to GDS for their baseball program. It might help them in basketball but what helps them more is the ability to scholarship. If my son were a basketball player and he was offered a paid education at GDS and all he has to do is play ball for a good coach in Freddie Johnson, I would have to consider that.

Again, not trying to argue. Just don’t see how a kid is left behind.

  5. DO YOU KNOW HOW MANY COACHS WORKS OUT WITH AAU TEAMS IN THE SUMMER? SOME COACHS SUPPLYMENT THEY INCOME BY COACHING AAU IN THE SUMMER. ALL I AM SAYING IS HIGH SCHOOL COACHS SHOULD BE ALLOWED TO COACH AAU. THEY MAKE ALOT OF CONNECTSIONS THAT CAN HELP THEM OUT WITH THE KIDS. IT HELPS THE COACH AS WELL BE KEEPING THE MIND ON THE GAME. THIS IS A BAD IDEA!!!!!!!!!!!!! TEACHERS DONT MAKE GOOD COACHS SORRY AFTER DEALING WITH KIDS ALL DAY AT THE END OF THE DAY THEY ARE READY TO GO HOME. WATCH THIS WILL BLOW UP IN OUR FACE………LOL

  6. Does anybody know what the exception to the transfer rule are? I found it odd that they didn’t list the exceptions in the N&R article.

  7. Got Greene, I do realize that many HS coaches coach AAU/Showcase or whateverit’s called. But I think these “connections” you refer to have caused some of the problems. I do see your point. In some situations it creates a coaching void. The last thing I want is more parent coaching of HS age kids.

Tom, I’m asking the same question. In my opinion that part was left out of the article on purpose.

  8. kirk, a while back you said you would remain loyal to your beloved ragsdale, and that everyone should follow your example to do the same at their respective institution. now you say , if the grass is greener you have to go. i guess your opinion changes depending on who’s but you are kissing at the time.

  9. Josh, beg your pardon? I didn’t say that at all. Read what I said. For instance, let’s say a family has an opportunity to buy a house at a foreclosure price and upgrade their standard of living. So they move from let’s say Northwest to Southern Guilford. Should that kid have to sit out a year? Or let’s look at the other way. Let’s say someone loses their house due to a foreclosure and has to move. The only thing they can find that they can afford is in another district. Should that kid be penalized for a year? FWIW, I know of a situation similar to that. And these situations come up. My wife is in real estate. That is what I was referring to. Should kids in these situations have to sit out a year?

As far as my family, unless the sky falls in, my sons will attend Ragsdale as their public school option. If a change were made it would be to a private school and would not be driven by athletics. And since you don’t know me, both my boys started in private school and had very good experiences. Get your facts before you speak. Don’t assume. BTW, I’m not saying everyone should stay where they are nor I am in love with Ragsdale. It’s been good for one son. Hopefully it will work out for another. My opinion is just that we should follow the rules in place, whatever they are. People are free to go where they want.

  10. “If my son were a basketball player and he was offered a paid education at GDS and all he has to do is play ball for a good coach in Freddie Johnson, I would have to consider that”……….sounds like athletics to me

  11. Hey– Everybody! Did you know that at tonight’s school board meeting middle school athletics could be in danger! Also there is talk of cutting the school resource officers.

  12. Fellas,
You have to give this guy Kirk, he is not short of opinions on anything—-and I mean anything.

  13. I would think coaching Colt and Palomino for HS coaches would continue as these are not travel teams. Colt and Palomino are “Area” teams that members must live in local HS zones. The coaches would not be coaching other HS kids other than their own if done properly.

  14. Kirk has kids that have attended both public and private. What’s wrong with sharing an opinion? I don’t see where he forces his opinion on anyone. And his kids have played most of these sports at various levels.

  15. Bill – makes sense…are the colt and palomino teams actually associated with the schools or is it a ‘district’ thing? Grey

  16. Are these baseball teams controlled by the individual high schools and are they limited to the players from that high school? If they are not, this should not be allowed. People wanted this type of coaching cleaned up and this is an unwanted result. This is probably a fun well intended league, but the uproar over how Northern and the involvement with AAU has caused changes. Not all of the changes are going to be well received.

  17. I would say, according to the language in the article, : (Restricts any head coach or assistant coach from coaching children of the same age outside the school system or scouting for colleges or club teams or owning or working for a business that sells sports realted products.), that this would also be no longer allowed.
These leagues are run by Pony Baseball and the Parks and Rec department, which are outside the school system. AAU, USSSA and any outside group would also be deemed illegal.
To take away the quality of coaching from the summer programs is going to adversely affect the kids. We need to encourage our coaches to work with the kids instead of making them feel like criminals for wanting to.
It seems that the school system and school board are way over stepping their bounds. Especially in these economic times when people are being displaced, forced to move out of their homes, look for new employment and in the case of teachers, supplement their incomes.
Now if you are forced to move, your child will pay the price of loosing 25% of their eligibility. Isn’t this throwing the baby out with the bath water????????????????

  18. Sure it’s a bad idea, but why would you expect anything but a bad idea from these idiots? These people ( be they school board members or GCS employees) just do not get it! They go from one extreme to another. They are paying people lots of money just to do their jobs, but they are incapable of performing so they overreact! They pay these people lots of money, then a good retirement, and they can’t function normally. This is one crazy world! Guilford county has to be one of the most screwed up places in the world, much less NC.
    Jerry

  19. it sounds as though kirk is saying that the the basketball program and academics at ragsdale are inferior to greensboro day, but the positive thing is that ragsdale is free

  20. VOTE THESE PURITAN MORONS OUT…..THEN FIRE MO GREEN AND HIS OVERPAID DISTRICT SUPERINTENDENTS…THEN HAVE OPEN ENROLLMENT…ALL PROBLEMS SOLVED….GUILFORD COUNTY CITIZENS WILL THEN BE VIEWED BY THE REST OF THE STATE AS ONE OF THE BEST TO LIVE IN…PASS THESE STUPID RULES AND NO ONE WILL WANT TO LIVE HERE…WATCH AND SEE
