Wooden and three others shine for Guilford on the national stage

GUILFORD AMONG 2009 NCAA DIVISION III STATISTICAL LEADERS

Greensboro, N.C. — Four Guilford College spring student-athletes ranked among the final 2009 NCAA Division III statistical leaders in seven categories.

Sophomore Kyle Wooden (Monroe, N.C./Sun Valley) ranked among the top 15 in three Division III baseball categories. The second team All-America designated hitter led all NCAA divisions with a school-record .514 batting average. He also finished 11th in slugging percentage (.841) and fourth in on-base percentage (.588).

Freshman softball pitcher Jessica Burcham (Lexington, N.C./South Davidson) ranked in the top 15 in two categories. She placed eighth in strikeouts per seven innings (9.9) and 12th in saves (3). Both figures are Guilford school records. As a team, the Quakers boasted the 11th-highest fielding percentage (.971) in Division III softball. Guilford made just 32 errors in 255 chances.

In women’s lacrosse, junior goalie Alyzza-May Callahan (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford), placed 15th in Division III with 192 saves. Senior Jennifer Abelin (Somers, Conn./Somers) ranked 12th in caused turnovers per game (2.38).
