GUILFORD ADDS SIX MORE TO 2009 FOOTBALL RECRUITING CLASS
Greensboro, N.C. — Guilford College head football coach Kevin Kiesel announced the intention of six more incoming students to play football for the Quakers Wednesday. All seven students have made their deposit to the college and will enroll for classes beginning in August. They join 53 others who have already expressed their intention to attend Guilford and play football.
Scotty Gettys, Jr. (Bessemer City, N.C.) lettered four seasons at Bessemer City High School for coach Larry Boone. The 5-11, 165-pound receiver earned All-Southern Piedmont 2A Conference recognition for the Yellow Jackets. Gettys also received all-conference track and basketball recognition and was the team’s Most Valuable Player in both sports. He received Bessemer City’s Best Male Athlete of the Year Award in 2008. Gettys’ cousin, Lamont Hall, played in the NFL for six seasons with the Green Bay Packers and New Orleans Saints.
James Harris (Pikeville, N.C.) lettered four years at Rosewood High School for coach Robert Britt. The running back received honorable mention All-Carolina 1A Conference recognition. Also a standout for the Eagles’ basketball team, Harris received all-conference honors, was twice named Most Valuable Player, and played in the state finals. As a high jumper and sprinter, he qualified for the 2009 state track championships. He considered Brevard College, North Carolina Wesleyan College, and Virginia Union University before choosing Guilford.
Roy Marsh (Zebulon, N.C.) lettered two seasons at East Wake High School for coach Jimmy Williams. The 6-3, 255-pound lineman earned All-Neuse River Conference recognition for the Warriors. Marsh also received academic all-conference recognition in tennis and received the United States Marine Corps Athletic Award. He considered East Carolina University, Appalachian State University, and Western Carolina before choosing Guilford.
Christian Neikens (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) lettered three seasons at Fuquay-Varina High School for coach Ryan Habich. The 5-10, 165-pound running back received honorable mention All-Tri-Eight Conference honors. Neikens also lettered two years in track and was named the team’s Most Valuable Player. A member of the National Honor Society, Neikens considered Averett University, Fayetteville State University, and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke before choosing Guilford.
D.J. Redmond (Raleigh, N.C.) played three years and lettered one season at Sanderson High School for coach Tony Lewis. The 5-11, 175-pound wide receiver/defensive back suffered a preseason injury, prohibiting him from playing his senior year for the Spartans. Redmond graduated with honors and intends to major in health sciences.
Earl Womble, Jr. (Siler City, N.C.) is transferring from Mars Hill College where he did not appear in any games. He played football at Jordan-Matthews High School for coach Marty Scotton. The 5-10, 190-pound running back received All-Yadkin Valley Conference honors and was recognized as the league’s 2006 Offensive Player of the Year. In 2007, he was the Player of the Year runner-up and was the team’s Most Valuable Player. Womble’s cousin, Trieston Burnette, played for Guilford’s baseball team from 2005-07.
Guilford concluded the 2008 season with a 4-6 overall record, 1-5 in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quakers lost nine seniors from the 2008 team and expect as many as 37 letter winners back in 2009. Kiesel’s club is scheduled to open the season Sept. 5 at 1:00 p.m. against Greensboro College in the 13th annual Gate City Soup Bowl.
