  1. The Northwest Guilford Flying Squirrels won the CCSSL semifinal game 7-6 over Richmond County in a great baseball game Saturday afternoon at Lee County High school to advance to the championship game. The scoring line went:

    Northwest 1 3 0 0 1 2 7 10 2

Garrett Stell ( ’10) started the game and pitched into the 5th inning. Stephen Mekita( ’10) replaced Stell and was the winning pitcher. Josh Voss ( ’10) had a key hit to drive in two runs with two out in the bottom of the 6th to send Northwest into the lead. Corey McKinney ( ’10) had a sac fly RBI and scored two runs. Sanders Kuxhausen ( ’11) was 2/4 with a double and an RBI. Stephen Mekita was 2 for 2. Ben Schmucker ( ’11) had a double, RBI, and scored a run. Ben Saunders ( ’10) hit a solo 380 foot homerun. In the championship game, Northwest was up against a very strong hitting South Central team who had won earlier in the day over Pinecrest. Northwest jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, but South Central came back and took the lead 4-3 on two homeruns. Josh Voss ( ’10) was able to tie the game 4-4 for Northwest by driving in the runner from 3rd with one out. South Central scored two runs in the 7th inning to go up 6-4 and win the championship.
    The line score was:
    South Central 0 0 0 4 0 0 2 6 9 2
    Northwest 1 1 1 0 1 0 0 4 4 1
The pitchers for Northwest were Ben Saunders, Keaton Haack, and Stephen Mekita.
Stephen Mekita had an RBI. Ben Saunders had an RBI and two runs. Garett Stell was 2 for 4. Josh Voss had a double and two RBI’s. The other two runs were scored by Corey McKinney and Dalton Dillon ( ’12).

The Northwest team had a great summer season winning the Northwest CCSSL Division with a 12-2 record and making it to the championship game in their first season competing in the 47 team league for 2009.

Many thanks to the coaches Sonny Gann, John Gann, and Mike Everette for the time they put in with the boys this summer.
