LEE’S REBUILDING TASK BEGINS
Aggies open the season at Winston-Salem State on Sept. 5

GREENSBORO, 2009 – North Carolina A&T’s football has produced a Pro Football Hall of Famer, a two-time Super-Bowl winning defensive lineman, tons of outstanding running backs and even a presidential candidate.

Over the last few seasons, however, the program has not measured up to some of the great eras of the past. New head coach Alonzo Lee is looking to rebuild the Aggies’ legacy. The legacy rebuilders begin preseason practice 9 a.m., Tuesday.

The players reported to camp on Sunday for check-in and equipment pick-up. On Monday, they will participate in a variety of speed and weight lifting tests. Tuesday marks the first day the Aggies will hold an official practice. Practice will also be held at 9 a.m., Wednesday-Saturday this week.

“Everything that involves winning starts in the mind,’’ said Lee. “It’s obvious that when building young men, you have to get them to understand that it starts with being able to make a commitment. I’ve been blessed with the ability to get men to believe in themselves. The next step is to get them to believe in the concepts we’re presenting to them on and off the field. Once they are committed. Once they become believers. The winning will start.”

In a community outreach effort, the Wentworth Panthers youth football team will practice with the Aggies Saturday morning at 9. Following practice and a noon luncheon on Saturday, the Aggies will hold their annual Picture Day at Aggie Stadium. It is an opportunity for the media to shoot video and take pictures of the 2009 Aggies.

The Aggies were picked to finish eighth in the MEAC. They are coming off a season in which they went 3-9 overall and 1-7 in the conference. Two Aggie seniors – defensive end Tyre Glasper and linebacker Andre Thornton – were selected to the All-MEAC preseason second-team defense.

Glasper had 42 tackles last season and 12 tackles for loss. Thornton finished second on the team in tackles last season after leading the Aggies in tackles his first two seasons. He has recorded 221 tackles in his career. The Aggies begin the ’09 season on Sept. 5 when they travel to Winston-Salem to face arch-rival Winston-Salem State at Bowman Gray Stadium at 6 p.m.
