Tracking the “Boys of Summer”

It’s almost time for last year’s seniors to head off to college. Since we’re talking about the Boys of Summer, we want to know, what local kids are on a college baseball roster?

We addressed this issue a month or two ago during Palomino season, and heard about a number of local kids that will play at the next level. There are those that are going to try to walk on and earn a spot, there are others that have a spot. Who has a spot?

The latest we hear about at greensborosports.com is Kevin Rose. Kevin has committed to pitch for Louisburg College. I remember Kevin as the shy kid at Grimsley that Alan Ashkinazy was grooming as one of his main guys for 2009.

Kevin got the opportunity of a lifetime his junior season (2008) when Alan gave him the start vs. Page at NewBridge Bank Park. With excellent defense behind him, Kevin responded with a no-hitter. Big Jim and I made the radio call for that game. It was a pleasure to watch.

Kevin is one of many kids that learned to play the game at the Greensboro Batting Center. I know there are others out there. Who has a spot?

  1. Ethan Ellington- Rockingham HS is going to Greensboro College

Lane Bray- Chatham Central is going to Greensboro College

Brent Moore- Reidsville HS is going to NC AT

Mike Parker- Reagan HS is going to Lenoir Rhyne

  2. The Renos team from Palomino had a number of players headed to Rockingham CC. Somebody help me with names, but I heard Wyrick, Revels, Almond, and Raynor to RCC, and Taylor Atkins is headed to Pitt CC. For the Elks, as far as I know, Rose is the only kid on a college roster this year, and maybe a couple others that will attempt to walk-on. I don’t know about Chatham Co., D’Backs, and Villains.

  3. I think Casey Beal from Chatham going to play at Greensboro College next year. Not sure about D’Backs. Villains are Bishop McGuinness but most of their better players played in various scattered travel leagues so the Villains Team from this summer was mostly backups and JV’s I believe. Their Varsity that one the NW Conference this year only had one senior, Barker (Tom or Tony???) and he is apparently playing next year at Guilford College.
