Olson says Durham may be loaded, plus history on Hillside

Stan “The Man” Olson, says the Grimsley Whirlies upcoming football opponent for this Friday night, may be loaded for bear.

Grimsley faces Durham Hillside at the Hornets’ nest in Durham tomorrow night and here’s what Olson is saying about Hillside at the Charlotte Observer on-line edition.

We will give you a link at the conclusion, so you can check in and read all.

Here’s the inside from the outside:

The Class of 2011 is jam-packed with kids who can play.

An example is Durham Hillside High, where coach Antonio King is licking his lips in anticipation as he watches his juniors run around in practice.

He starts with QB Vad Lee, of course, a junior who is already high on colleges’ recruiting boards. But he goes on from there—and on.

“We have literally 15 kids in our junior class who will be recruited by Division I schools if everything goes well for them,” King said. “It is amazing. I have never heard of a high school program having that many recruitable kids in one class before.”

Compare that with Hillside’s current seniors. King says three are drawing significant recruiting attention.

The history on Hillside:
Hillside High School (abbreviated HHS) is a four-year high school located in Durham, North Carolina. Hillside is one of seven high schools in the Durham Public Schools System. Of more than 300 historically black high schools that once operated in the state before desegregation, only five remain today, with Hillside being the oldest. Hillside is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.

Because of five consecutive years of composite testing scores of below 55%, Judge Howard Manning has threatened to close the school (along with 17 other North Carolina high schools) under the Leandro ruling, which states that North Carolina must provide a sound, basic education for all citizens.

Eunice Sanders, who was Hillside’s principal for four years, resigned after the 2005-2006 school year to move to an administrative position within the Durham Public Schools Central Office. Earl Pappy is currently Hillside’s principal. Pappy served as principal of George Wythe High School of the Arts in Richmond from 2002 until 2006.

  1. Good evening –

The history that you published is a little outdated. It should be noted that our school is one of tremendous pride
with a long standing history of service to the Durham Community. Here is some more updated information
regarding our school and program. The newest principal at Hillside is Mr. Hans Lassiter, a graduate of Dudley
High School and North Carolina A&T. Mr. Lassiter’s most recent stint as principal was at Southern Lee High
School before he went on to work at NC DPI. He began his teaching career as a history teacher at the school
    during the early 1990’s.

Head Coach Antonio King (Hillside 93′) was a standout quarterback for the Hornets during his years at the
school. He played in the East-West game in 1993 and went on to play collegiate football at Howard University
and North Carolina Central University respectively.

Our football program has a very proud tradition. The 1943 Hillside Football team holds a state record for consecutive shutouts (8) in a season where the team went undefeated (8-0). Last year’s Hillside team went 12-2-
1 falling one game short of the State Championship game for the 4-A division.
