Nighthawks hold off Rams 26-20

Like the impending rain Northern Guilford held of Northeast Guilford 26-20 in front of a packed house at Bill Bookout Stadium as Northern made their first trip to what for many Nighthawk students was their former school.

The Nighthawks struck quickly as on the thrid play of the night Rocco Scarfone hit Maurice Harris with a 55yd TD pass for a early 6-0 lead. But midway thru the opening stanza Northeast struck back as Darius White went 52yds on an option keeper to give the Rams a 7-6 edge. However late in the first period the game turned as following a Nighthawk fumble the Rams showed the inability to handle the good fortune as Keenan Allen of Northern scopped up an errant option pitch and scampered 18yds giving Northern a lead they would never relinquish.

After a scoreless second quarter Allen struck again as his 52yd punt return deep into Northeast territory set up aa 13yd scoring run on the following snap from Mohamed Khellah to extend the Northern lead to 19-7. Then on the following possesion the Nighthawks looked to be running away with the issue as Scarfone threw his 2nd TD pass, this one a 18yd toss on 4th and 7 to Daniel Downing concluding a 8 play 45yd march and stretching the Nighthawk advantage to 26-7 at the end of three periods.

But in the final period the Rams would pull a Dylan Thomas as Northeast refused to go gentle into that good night. Trey Ingram punched in from the two finishing a 13play 52yd six minute drive to pull Northeast to 26-14 with 10 minutes to go. The issue appeared to be settled moments later when Scarfone scampered 46yds to put Northern into the red zone, but a 4th down scramble by Scarfone was called back due to a block in the back and the Rams took over at their own 23 with just over five minutes to play. Ten plays later Ingram had his 2nd score of the period as he was not going to be denied on a 10yd burst to pull the Rams within a score with two minutes to play.

On the following possesion the Rams held the Nighthawks to a three and out to give their offense one final shot. On their final possesion Northeast drove inside the Nighthawk 40 but a desperation White pass was intercepted by Maurice Harris to quell the Rams final threat.

  1. Keenan Allen and his cousin Maurice Harris will have big numbers this season on both sides of the ball. They are hands down one of the best wide reciever duo in Guilford County.Allen 6’3 and Harris 6’4 it’s going to be hard for a lot of db’s to stick them man to man.
