Items Belonging to Athlete Killed in Crash Stolen from Home

GUILFORD COUNTY, N.C. – The mother of a Southern Guilford High School football player killed in a car crash last year said someone broke into her home Friday and stole items that belonged to her son and provided a way for her to remember him.

When 17-year-old Scotty Wayne died in a car crash in October, his family was able to recover a few things he had on him, including a digital camera an an old Sprint cell phone.

“And the cell phone, it was still on, because a lot of his friends still call the phone to hear his voice and hear messages and things like that,” said Sharon Bennett, Wayne’s mother.

Bennett said someone broke into her Barn Owl Ct. home Friday and stole jewelry, electronics, some of Wayne’s memorabilia, including that phone.

“The most important items missing were the ones that belonged to my son,” she said Sunday. “I know I can’t replace him, but those are memories on those that mean a lot to me.”

Other important things missing included a video camera with a tape of an August 20 celebration Wayne’s family and friends had for what would have been the the star athlete’s 18th birthday. A stolen laptop had many photos of family and friends, and Wayne’s camera had pictures of an East Carolina campus visit he took before he died.

Wayne was scheduled to attend ECU on a full scholarship.

Bennett said whoever broke into her home went about the house carefully, even closing some drawers back up. She’s filed a report with the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office.

“I don’t care if they just come and lay them on the porch or turn them in to somebody,” said Bennett. “I don’t care who did it. I don’t care the reason. I would just like to have those back.”
