GOMEZ COLLECTS FIRST GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK AWARD

Greensboro, N.C. — Freshman Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) of the men’s soccer team earned the first Guilford College Student-Athlete of the Week Award of the new school year Monday. The prize is presented weekly by Guilford’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

Gomez scored three goals and an assist in the Quakers’ 1-1-1 week. A 5-6, 145-pound midfielder/forward, Gomez scored all of his points in the Quakers’ record-setting 10-1 win over Gallaudet University. His seven points lead the team through three matches. He also played well in Guilford’s season-opening 6-1 loss to 24th-ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College and in the Quakers’ 1-1 draw with NAIA-member Milligan University.

Coach Jeff Bateson’s Quakers return to action Wednesday (9/9) at Averett University.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and non-student-athletes.

Past Guilford SAAC activities have included breast cancer awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
