Mayhew leads Aggies over Norfolk State Spartans

Greensboro – Sophomore Mike Mayhew rushed for 87 yards on 14 carries, including the game-winning touchdown in the third quarter and North Carolina A&T made two fourth-quarter defensive stands, as the Aggies won their home opener with a 17-13 victory over Norfolk State on Saturday.

The Spartans (1-1) started fast, getting a 30-yard touchdown run from Dennis Brown to go up 7-0. After an A&T field goal, Norfolk State struck again in the second quarter with a 16-yard touchdown catch by Chris Bell from quarterback Dennis Brown to push the advantage to 13-3.

The Aggies (2-0), however, gained the momentum before halftime as quarterback Carlton Fears connected with Wallace Miles for a 25-yard touchdown just before halftime.

The second half belonged to A&T, as the Aggies got an 8-yard touchdown run from Mayhew to grab a 17-13 lead and never relinquished it.

The A&T defense held its part of the bargain with a goal line stand in the fourth quarter, and then forcing the Spartans to give the ball up on downs again with just over two minutes left in the game.
