Fast freshman Freddy “go-to guy” Gomez from Guilford does it again

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Freshman Freddy Gomez (Burlington, N.C./Williams) scored twice in Guilford College’s 2-0 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) win over visiting Randolph-Macon College in both teams’ league opener Friday night.

Gomez extended his goal-scoring streak to three as the Quakers (5-2-1, 1-0 ODAC) won for the third straight game. Guilford is 5-1-1 in its last seven matches.

Gomez opened the scoring in the 43rd minute after taking a looping feed from Jordan Alexander deep in the box and slotting it past Yellow Jackets’ keeper Chris Royster. He netted his team-leading seventh score with just under eight minutes to play when he collected a loose ball off a Randolph-Macon (0-6, 0-1 ODAC) defender and scored.

Guilford’s Jonathan Shine replaced injured starter Peter Truitt in goal and made four saves to preserve the shutout and earn the victory. Royster finished with five stops for Randolph-Macon.

The Quakers wrap up a three-game homestand Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. versus Emory University.
