Western Sqeaks past Southern 28-27

In a gentle fog on a night better suited to a Sherlock Holmes novel. Western Guilford continued to solve the mystery of Southern Guilford as the Hornets defeated the storm for the 8th straight time with a 28-27 win tonight on the Western campus. Aaron Jones led the way for Western as he unoffically ran for 166yds on 28 carries and three TD’s to pace the Hornets. Warren Scott set the pace for the storm with 122yds on 24 attempts.

Western drew first blood as Jones scored his first TD on a one yard plunge with 4:06 to play in the opening stanza completing a 14play 78yd 5:42 drive. After a exchange of punts Southern struck back going 64yds on a dozen plays to tie the contest on a sneak from QB Jamie Cunningham. After forcing a three and out Southern struck again as a blocked punt put the Storm on the one yard line and Southern literally took no time at all to convert as Cunningham again scored on a sneak that was so quick as to not move the game clock, so technically it was a 1play 1yd :00 drive!

The Hornets tied matters just before the half as Jones got his 2nd score on a 2yd plunge. Southern however responded at the start of the 2nd half as once again a Western special teams error, this time a poor snap that the punter had to kneel for in order to field put the Storm at the Hornet 24. Three plays later Scott scored on a 8yd sweep around the right side to place Southern back ahead by a score. Western again responded by grinding out a 13play 59yd six minute plus march to tie the game once again as Jones did the honors again, this time on a four yard run.

Southern though responded and took the lead once again as Cunningham connected with TE Wesley Stevens on a 9yd scoring pass on a play where the ball was deflected off of another pass catcher. However a missed extra point would prove to be fatal as Western again surged ahead driving 65yds in 9 plays. QB Josh Thompson concluded the drive by connecting on a 33td TD pass to Jabri Ridenhour on a 4th and 3 with 6:35 to play as Western regained the lead for the first time since the opening period. Thompson was 10-16 on the night for for 108yds on the night.

Southern tried to surge one more time but the Hornet defense came up with a stop to force a turnover on downs then Jones personally took care of the rest rushing for a pair of first downs to kill the clock as Western rose to 2-3. Southern drops to 1-3.
